(The Guardian) Gunmakers summoned to Congress to testify on gun violence
Democrats in Congress are summoning the CEOs of firearm manufacturers to testify at a hearing later this month on gun violence.

“I am deeply troubled that gun manufacturers continue to profit from the sale of weapons of war, including AR-15-style assault rifles that were used by a white supremacist to murder ten people in Buffalo, New York, and in the massacre of 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas,” Carolyn Maloney, the Democratic chair of the House Oversight Committee, wrote in letters to the leaders of Daniel Defense, Smith & Wesson, and Ruger, which make AR-15 style rifles.

“Products sold by your company have been used for decades to carry out homicides and even mass murders, yet your company has continued to market assault weapons to civilians.”

Under her leadership, the committee began investigating gun manufacturers last May. The following month, it held a hearing featuring gut-wrenching testimony from survivors of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

The latest hearing is set for July 20.

It's not the responsibility of the manufacturer in regards to how someone uses their product. This is apparently something lost on the left but anyone with some sense should be able to grasp this concept. Lots of things that aren't fire arms have been used by civilians to carry out murders yet somehow none of those manufactures are called to testify on the matter... I wonder why?

What would a typical person in society need an AR-15-style assault rifle for in the first place?

Use your rights or lose them.

Anyways I think some people have missed what Australia did to its own people recently along with a few other countries. I think people have forgotten all about the horrors of the 20th century from government killing half billion people. We have a combined registered 400 million guns and probably another 600 million unregistered. Trillions of rounds of ammo. Government knows if they push to hard it will lead to hundreds of thousands of lives lost and a America no longer.

You need a ar15 or any gun just to keep government on its toes.

Tell it to someone who uses a firearm for self-defense (regardless of the firearm used)....
The latest research confirms that guns are used more in self-defense than they are in crimes.

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, there were around 480,000 criminal uses of guns in 2019. Although this number might seem significant when viewed in isolation, existing research has consistently shown that the number of annual defensive gun uses vastly exceeds criminal uses.

A 2013 review of the literature by the National Research Council found that “almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million.” At the time of the 2013 report, there were nineteen surveys on the frequency of defensive gun uses. All found that defensive gun uses were prevalent. The vast majority of these surveys indicated that there are at least a million annual defensive gun uses. Of these, the most reliable survey found at least 2.1 million defensive uses of guns each year.

Confirming this scholarly consensus, two recent studies lend strong confirmation to the idea that defensive gun uses vastly outnumber criminal uses, with one finding that there is 1.67 million defensive gun uses each year.

The 2021 National Firearms Survey, directed by William English of Georgetown University, surveyed more than 54,000 Americans and identified 16,000 gun owners. They were then asked a battery of questions related to their ownership of firearms. Five methods were used to ensure truthful answers. Mr. English’s survey utilized the largest sample size of any study that has ever been conducted on defensive gun use, being nearly ten times greater than that of the next largest survey.
