Los Angeles Times: Cuba Dropped From U.S. Terrorism List

The Obama administration Friday officially removed Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, another step toward the president's goal of normalizing ties between the nations.

The move was expected, coming 45 days after President Obama notified Congress that he intended to drop Cuba from the list.

The action "reflects our assessment that Cuba meets the statutory criteria for rescission," Jeff Rathke, a State Department spokesman, said in a statement.

Cuba has long objected to the listing, and has made clear that it would not cooperate with the administration in steps to improve the relationship until the move was made.

In his statement, Rathke noted that the United States still has "significant concerns and disagreements with a wide range of Cuba's policies and actions." But those weren't relevant to whether Cuba was included on the list, he said.

*scratches head in thought* I don't know if its' that per se', but removing Cuba from the terrorism list is a recognition of the simple reality that, compared to other countries, Cuba hasn't been much of a state sponsor since the end of the Cold War; it might also be another sign that maybe it is time to re-establish links w/our next-door neighbor.

Terrorists still use Cuba as a hiding place to stay under the authority of the Cuban government. And it has made no attempts to change it's communists ways in the least. Why should we reward that? It like we are telling Cuba we just do not see communism as evil and you just keep doing what you are doing.
