Cuba passes sweeping reforms with new family code

The 100-page “family code” legalises same-sex marriage and civil unions, allows same-sex couples to adopt children, and promotes equal sharing of domestic rights and responsibilities between men and women.

The Cuban government have recently passed legislation which introduces a sweeping new family code. Not only is this legislation promising for how progressive it is when it comes to advancing human rights within the family space, but the processes that were implemented when it came to designing the legislation. Extensive use of townhall meetings and community input were part of the process of creating this legislation.

Progressive International called the 100-page document, which was finalized after more than two dozen drafts were hammered out in nearly 80,000 neighborhood meetings, "the most progressive Family Code in the world."

I would say that the legislation which they just passed regarding their new family code would go a long way towards that goal. It is one of, if not the, most progressive pieces of legislation ever passed regarding the family and domestic politics. Also the procedure behind how they came up with the legislation is really impressive. I can't remember the last time we ever had such an extensive outreach to the community when it came to passing major legislation here in New Zealand for instance.
