A four-year-old boy who was "deliberately starved" by his mother and her partner was so thin he looked like he had leukaemia, a court has heard.

The claim was made by the teacher of Daniel Pelka, a boy from Coventry alleged to have been the victim of incomprehensible cruelty.

Lisa Godfrey told Birmingham Crown Court: "He looked sad, like an old man. Very thin.

"So pale you could almost see through him. His eyes were also sunken into his head."

She went on to describe how he turned up for school with a hat on one day and looked like he was suffering from leukaemia.

Ms Godfrey said Daniel started to steal food from the lunch boxes of other children, so the food had to be locked away.

"Daniel never looked naughty when he took food, he just looked desperate," she added.

He died in the early hours of March 3 after his stepfather called paramedics to their home.

Prosecutor Jonas Hankin QC said Daniel suffered a subdural haematoma, a serious brain condition that is caused when blood collects between the skull and the surface of the brain.

Mr Hankin added Daniel's body was found to have 24 distinct areas of injury and that medical experts who took part in the post-mortem examination found very little body fat on his body.

The post-mortem discovered the youngster had "groups of injury" on his head, torso and all four limbs, and discernible bruising to his right scalp.

His mother Magdelena Luczak and her partner Mariusz Krezolek deny murder and deny causing or allowing the death of a child.

Krezolek, 33, and Luczak, 27, have both admitted a charge of child cruelty.

The trial, which opened on Monday, is expected to last eight weeks.

I'm not blaming the teacher for his death but I don't understand how this teacher noticed all of this and didn't call the proper authorities.
