Do you actually delete threads or do you just move them to a hidden forum?
What threads need to be deleted and what threads need to be saved?
Is there a reason to keep threads?

We have a hidden trash forum and "deleted" threads get moved there for a while... Until I clean out the trash can forum (delete all the posts in there), then the threads are deleted for real. I like a tidy forum. :)

It's better that way, because you keep the post count while disposing of the bad content... Everyone wins!

I only delete threads when I think it's necessary. I once had to delete a thread from my forum because I found out that I posted the exact same thread twice except it was on different days.

Having a trash can is a must on a forum. So your post count won't be affected after deleting something.

I can clear out a trash can with 15,000 posts and not even think twice about the forum's overall post count.

In MyBB (and others as well, I believe, but I'm not gonna check) deleting posts/threads won't reduce global post count (for reasons of efficiency). There's an option to recalculate stats which Nebulous has used a few times.
Anyway, point being, a hidden forum is not a must to preserve post count.

However, a hidden forum is a nice way to be able to restore "deleted" threads.
