WASHINGTON (AP) — The official sign-up season for President Barack Obama's health care law may be over, but leading congressional Democrats say millions of Americans facing new tax penalties deserve a second chance.

Three senior House members told The Associated Press that they plan to strongly urge the administration to grant a special sign-up opportunity for uninsured taxpayers who will be facing fines under the law for the first time this year.

The three are Michigan's Sander Levin, the ranking Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, and Democratic Reps. Jim McDermott of Washington, and Lloyd Doggett of Texas. All worked to help steer Obama's law through rancorous congressional debates from 2009-2010.

The lawmakers say they are concerned that many of their constituents will find out about the penalties after it's already too late for them to sign up for coverage, since open enrollment ended Sunday.

That means they could wind up uninsured for another year, only to owe substantially higher fines in 2016. The fines are collected through the income tax system.

They already do that with auto insurance and I don't see people bitching about that. And if that isn't enough, some residents in high-risk areas must purchase insurance to protect themselves from natural disasters.

i think car insurance is totally different though, driving is a privilege to the us government...

and who ever doesn't drive or own a car isn't forced to buy car insurance...

just like people that don't own a house doesn't pay property tax...

Well they usually require you to have just the basic basic basic insurance and that can be pretty cheap, less than $30 or $40 a month for some people.

How much are the fines?

Can be several hundred dollars.

But, really, you don't know until you get hit with it.

You can get an idea here:

ACATitle.jpg

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires most Americans to have health insurance starting in 2014. People who don’t comply have to pay a penalty, the amount of which depends on several factors, including income and family size. This calculator lets you estimate the potential ACA penalty for individuals and married couples who don’t have health insurance coverage required by the ACA.

Certain groups are exempt from the penalty tax (click for list).

To see what the penalties are, just enter the requested information and click "Calculate."

Well I'm sure some uninsured people would rather fork out $600 a the end of the year instead of paying $200 - $500 (or more) per month for insurance.

and punishing poor people that can't afford to be forced into paying something that they don't want and/or need...

No! You have the free choice to have a car or not. No car no paying insurance. Have car you pay insurance. Free choice. Free will.

They are quite substantial. They were Small in the beginning though. But according to the law the IRS can do nothing to collect the fines unless you overpay in your taxes when the employer takes taxes out of your pay check. Just choose a deduction that gives no extra money to the IRS and tell them to kiss your ass. I am insured but I refused to give proof when doing my taxes this year. I am expecting the harassment in the near future.

Seems like an odd thing to do, show them you're insured. :P

It is my way of not cooperating with a unconstitutional law.

We have 'a number'....

The majority (52 percent) of Obamacare enrollees receiving an advance premium tax credit to purchase Obamacare insurance is facing the prospect of paying back $530 of that tax credit to the IRS, according to a new study from H&R Block. This clawback is reducing the refunds for these taxpayers by 17 percent this filing season.
