In Alberta, we have a deposit on all bottled drinks; milk, water, pop. Its 10c for 1L and under containers, 25c for containers over 1 liter. You have to take it to the bottle depot to get this money back. I always put these in a recycling bin anyways, so I don't think I should be punished having to pay that little more. I understand the idea behind; it's just personally I don't go to the depot.

Your thoughts? Should they really charge an additional fee?

Technically they don't charge the fee if you recycle them which leads to the problem of people actually recycling them in ways where they don't receive their money back which is a problem. I don't have a problem behind the idea as it encourages good behavior but they should look at making sure all who recycle them get their money for doing so. In the US, a few states do it and they charge five cents at the register which you get back when you recycle it by putting it into one of those machines that crunches it up and either spits out money or a receipt you take to a register.

I don't mind paying the extra fee because it get it back when I go to the recycle machine. It gives people the incentive to not throw bottles and cans out their cars windows or where ever they decide to throw them. I see an old man every day and he walks on the side of the road collecting bottles and cans. Perhaps this is the only way he has to make money to be able to eat.

What is a recycling machine? The only way for us to get the money back is taking it to a bottle depot. Not worth the gas for the money, sadly.

I would be 20 cents richer every day! I wish. We have recycling bins in the mall, but the mall gets money for it. I'm not too sure what they do with it. I remember at our school they donated it to the SPCA; so it was all in a good cause!

In many cases, it is just another tax.

How it works here, is yes, it is an additional fee, but all of the money goes to maintain bottle depots.
