They taught me respect but they were too strict.
This. Every lesson I failed to instantly learn resulted in a severe punishment, usually physical violence in a form of brutal beating with some solid object, like a wooden stick, something sturdy enough not to break on contact with my body.

My mom raised me. My father was in and out of the picture until I was 15. We got into it and I haven't heard from him in 20 years.

Yes and no at the same time. My dad was in and out until I was 8 or 9, then he was there all the time, because my mother thought it was better for us to have both parents, and he made good money, so she thought that was a good thing, too....it wasn't.

What did he do for a living?

Same as what I wound up in (him for money, me for passion), computer programming. He does mostly back-end work, so Oracle, SQL, that kind of stuff. I was full-stack.

Oh, surprised you dont live out here. Oracle offices all over the place (*googles* there are 8 field offices in California). Along with several other tech companie.

We lived in CA for a short while, but we moved to one job after another for him because he just can't settle or he gets into some new trouble with his stupid ideas and we have to move on.

Oh a job hopper? That’s not good. No sense of stability or comfort for your family.

Yeah, he would either find a great job that he liked and screw it up by doing some stupid get rich quick scheme that resulted in judgements or audits by the IRS, or he'd find a job he didn't like and start looking elsewhere. Never stayed in one place for more than 5 years in my entire life. I'd love some more permanents roots at some point...

It’ll happen one day

Both in some capacity. Mom and dad divorced when I was 7. Got to see dad with whatever custody arrangements they had and then moved to a different state where I was only seeing my dad once a year.

Do you have a good relationship with him?
