It depends on your definition of loads of posts and members is.
Some people would consider this forum to be active and successful but when you compare it to a forum like http://forums.digitalpoint.com/ then we are dead space on the web.

I don't think it's like winning the lottery. Time and patience is all it should take. Some might get traffic sooner than others, but I think it is not pure luck involved. One can actually determine this factor in the life of their forum.

Perhaps in the owner of the forum's eyes, its perfect and he/she is unwilling to change anything. Advertising something like that will never pay off. On the flip side, someone could have an amazing forum with amazing content and has all the potential to become something huge... But it never happens.
That's just the way the world works. You win some / you lose some.
Then the second forum is not doing the proper things to make that forum successful. I don't believe in luck as the only form of success. If a forum has potential, then if managed by the correct person, it will succeed. Forums are successful based on the administrators. If you have a good administrators you will have a much better chance of seeing that forum succeed.

Yes, life has luck all the time. But let's put it this way shall we, who would be more successful at running a coding a forum, one who knows nothing about coding, one who knows a lot about coding, or one who knows a lot about coding and community management?
