Do we need swimming lessons before starting out

Can we just start swimming just watching others. Do you think one should take swimming lessons before starting. How did you start yours?

I did take swimming lessons before starting out. I think it is safer.

Some kids are naturals and can swim without being taught how. I was taught by my parents and had to take a class when I was around 6 years old.

I learned how to swim with the help of my cousin in the countryside. If I want to be a professional swimmer, I must have the proper training with a coach.
