It seems my neighbors have a dog now. I hear that thing crying all night. Not cool.

I wonder if I can get a dog?

I think the place next door has a different landlord than I do (the whole street is duplex's / rentals).

That's very annoying to say the least. Wonder if it's a puppy. When mine were pups they cried too but they soon stopped.

I hope you're just kidding. It wouldn't be fair to the dog with the amount of hours you work.

I dont work those hours everyday + my backyard is big enough for a smaller dog to run around in.

Does your rental agreement allow pets? Most rental agreements that do, require extra security deposit in case the pet causes damage.

No, my neighbor said they told her she can have one if she keeps the animal outside.

Is it a puppy? If they've only just got it then it will cry for a while, it's just what they do lol. In a couple of weeks once it's settled down then it'll probably stop.

It is cruel to get a dog but not let it in the house. Dogs are pack animals, they really want to be with their pack (the family) and, if you isolate them, they truly feel that deprivation and suffer from it. It makes them sad to be left outside when the rest of the family is inside the house. Bonding with the family would be a problem and it's likely the dog would have various behavior problems like barking and crying because they crave contact.

Many shelters and pet adoptions agencies will not allow you to adopt a dog knowing you will not allow it in your home. I applaud these shelters/pet adoption agencies who enforce this. :calp:

Meh, when me and my family were living in a rented house, we weren't allowed animals. But we still let our dog into the house. No-one knew

You took a big chance doing that. If the dog had caused damage or the owner of the rented house paid you an unexpected visit, there would have been big problems. I own rental units and it's clearly in the rental agreement NO PETS. If I were to find a violation (as much as I love animals), I would give the tenants a 30 day vacate notice.

We didn't have a very good landlord anyway, and it was the same house that we nearly got burgled in, and the window was damaged, but we had to pay for it. My dog didn't cause any damage to the house since we were always there, and where he was, there was a large area for him to roam in. And most of the time, during the day, he was in the garden/garage. And when he came round to look, me and my sister would take him for a walk and go to my Grandparents, since they were only a few streets away.

I'd ask your own landlord about whether or not they allow dogs in the place your renting. Different supervisors have different feelings about this sort of subject. Some won't care one way or the other what kind of pet you bring in your house/apartment, while others will throw a fit if you even consider bringing so much as a dog in the house you're renting. I know when my grandmother was still living on her own, my aunt kept bringing her chiuaua along, but then my grandmother's landlord finally found out one time and chewed my aunt out for bringing the dog along. Basically all he told her was that they didn't allow animals in the apartment building. Sometimes that rule makes sense, because some people are scared of dogs, others are allergic, and some just downright don't like dogs. So I think this would be something to bring up with your supervisor about.

@Nebulous: Are you still considering getting a dog?
