The old dragon has grown up so Ive adopted a new egg. Those of you who had the old one in your signatures, I have updated your signature.

We have adopted an virtual dragon for the community to help hatch and grow, while earning Off Topix bucks at the same time.​

But (and you had to know this was coming).... the estimated incubation period for dinosaur eggs was between one to two months, varying by species, and 'dragons' are at least nominally dinosaurs.





I also find it curious that themost of the previous Off Topix Dragons had four legs AND wings- a combination that does not, and as far as we know, never has, occured in nature. And that includes Angels, two arms, two legs, two wings - sorry, no.



(the earliest recordings of the Babylonian incarnation of the Dragon of Chaos did not have wings.)



And yes, I have looked at the topic extensively over the years.

It occurs in bugs so maybe it could happen. Anyway, if they didn't have four legs we'd have to call them wyverns.

Right, silly me...

Even so, when you have 2 legs + 2 wings and 6 legs + 4 wings, why not 4 legs and 2 wings? Just because it didn't happen on Earth shouldn't mean it's impossible.

It probably does happen elsewhere, and perhaps it will here when we go around again, but in our past and present, it doesn't.





A bit more about our friends in an article about one that wasn't one either.....

There are depictions of dragons in the ruins of Inca and Myan temples, painted on cave walls in Europe, and in the books found in the rubble of Babylon. They wander through the tales of India and Africa. And come to us from the Dream Time of Aborigines creation stories.

And of course there was the Feathered Snake Quetzalcoatl of Teotihuacan from Mesoamerica in what in now Old Mexico. He is depicted more often as a serpent, or as an andromorphic (man-like) creature, but sometimes he has quite dragon like features, and modern representations make him out as a candidate for the next co-star in a Toho movie.

There are differences between those dragons from the different cultures, but the vast majority of them look more like each other than they do Godzilla.

Which should give you the idea, if nothing else we've talked about so far does, that the King of Monsters was a Monster, and not a Dragon, otherwise, he'd be the King of Dragons, and that just doesn't have the same ring to it for a movie marquis.

What it was about almost didn't matter. It had to be done on deadline, with no money.

Toho just wanted a movie. Quickly.
