Two drivers in the Bay of Plenty have been caught travelling well over the speed limit, with both also well over the drink-driving limit, say police.

A 45-year-old Hamilton man was caught travelling at 164kph (102mph) on State Highway 29 at Kaimai, inland from Tauranga, about 4.15pm yesterday, said Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Holmes.

He tried to hide from police in a driveway but was pointed out by other motorists. He returned a breath alcohol reading of 987 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. The limit is 400mcg.

In the second incident, about 11.30pm, a 19-year-old Tauranga man was caught travelling at 115kph (71mph) on 15th Avenue in Tauranga itself.

He returned a breath alcohol reading of 739mcg per litre of breath. The legal limit for drivers under 20 is 150mcg.

Both drivers had their licences suspended immediately and would be making court appearances, Mr Holmes said.

Both incidents were crashes waiting to happen and he praised the motorists who helped police.

When you combine speed with alcohol you have a lethal mix that more often than not leads to serious crashes.

How is this important news? Sure, it provides a prime example of why you shouldn't drink and drive, but that's common sense nowadays. This is hardly thread worthy.

And the thread you posted 3+ weeks ago about black parents giving birth to a white baby was important news?

Reminds me of a chick who went to my school.

Going 140 in a 60 zone. Unlicensed. Drunk. With passengers. Drugs found on her. Few more charges.

She's gooooooone!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the story, Kasynlie. It always amazes me how stupid people can be and in this thread alone you've shown us 3 perfect examples!!
Thanks. Did you note the time the first one was caught? 4:15pm. There would surely have been mothers driving her children home from school at that time.

That's very scary.

Humans helped drive a species of giant turtle to extinction almost 3,000 years ago, according to a study in PNAS.

It is one of the first cases that clearly shows that humans played a role in the demise of the giant, extinct animals known as megafauna.

An Australian research team discovered turtle leg bones - but not shells or skulls - on an island of Vanuatu.

The bones date to just 200 years after humans' arrival, suggesting they were hunted to extinction for their meat.

However, the turtles lived far longer than other megafauna - which included the famed woolly mammoth; while Australian megafauna is thought to have died out almost 50,000 years ago, it appears that these turtles survived for far longer - until the arrival of a people known as the Lapita.
