Don't know anything about the series but the trailer looked good. Am I going to be lost if I watch this film without knowing anything else?

Probably not. Sometimes when they're doing a movie based on the book, they normally add in all the origin back story and try to explain it to the audience. Otherwise they're looking at a box office bomb.
