i'm a huge advocate for eating raw foods, still live foods too, like sprouts and probiotics like kombucha and yoghurt. lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, but i love things like sushi, seviche and steak tartare as well. i've even been known to munch little bits of raw steak and chicken while i've been preparing them for cooking.

what are your most favorite things to eat raw and what common raw foods like oysters or sushi do you refuse to eat?

there is a recipe for mexican style ceviche on the source site for the picture and a how to make steak tartare video for those of you feeling brave, wanting to try them.

I eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables raw.

I refuse to eat raw oysters, sushi and that steak tartare makes me want to puke just looking at it! :green:

that's not surprising. you're probably in the majority among middle class westerners. have you ever had seviche? the citrus marinade sort of cooks the ingredients. it can be made with just fish or it gets made with things like shrimp, octupus, squid and mussels, but again, the marinade, gives the flesh a cooked consistency.

Never have tried this and after reading this, I never will:
Ceviche is marinated in a citrus-based mixture, with lemons and limes being the most commonly used. In addition to adding flavor, the citric acid causes the proteins in the seafood to become denatured, appearing to be cooked. (However, acid marinades will not kill bacteria or parasitic worms, unlike the heat of cooking.)

it's delicious. if the fish is real fresh or has been flash frozen bacteria won't be a problem, but you do have to be careful about parasitic worms when you buy fresh fish.

I'll pass on the raw food over here. I like my food cooked to perfection.

my parents would broil thick steaks for just a couple of minutes on each side and eat them bloody. just barely enough to sear the surface and warm them all the way through.

i love sea food . raw or cooked, though i don't usually do most things raw, beast flesh included, other than tartar steak, unless it's been heavily marinated and chemically cooked. my birthday feast when i was a kid started out with chilled oysters with cocktail sauce, followed by steamer clams and a whole lobster that got dipped in melted butter.
