I am a mod on a forum which has gone a bit quiet of late.

The site owner has now made a thread in the staff forum, asking us to make at least 3 posts every time we visit.

If you have a forum, do you set rules like that? Have you ever worked on a forum which set those kind of rules?

What do you all think of this?

Personally, I am not impressed. I dont like feeling obliged and forced into things....I'd rather a post seem natural, like I was genuinely posting, not posting for the sake of it.

I have been staff on forums where staff members are expected to make x amount of posts a day, and personally, it doesn't impress me either. I use to have those rules as well, but at the same time, those rules are a bit unfair. Yes, it's good to have those rules because it shows that your staff can be active, but at the same time it's not fair, because staff do have lives outside the computer, and they shouldn't be expected to be on 24/7.

The thing is, they know I'm active, I pop by every day, at least once. If there's any spam, I delete it right away....I think I'm doing my job as a mod....it's not my fault there's not always things to say. It's either a case of me visiting there less, or standing down, the way I see it at the moment. Or just ignoring the rule and carry on the way I am, I post most days anyway

I think other staff members will have a bit problem with it cause a couple of them almost never post.

No I would never do that to anyone but admins of boards I worked at in the past tried to force me to post and it don't work.

Your childish threats don't work and if being staff means I have to spam your board to satisfy your stats obsession then no thanks, I rather get fired instead. I am only going to post when I have something to say. Posting for any other reason is dumb unless it's like playing forum games or something like that where discussions aren't meant to take place.

Nope. I post everyday. My mods haven't actually posted for a while but there is never much to do anyway :/

I was a mod at FP a while back. They said they wanted me to make like 10 posts a day and reply to every single introduction and feedback thread.

I was majorly turned off by that. I was doing that (or more) without being required to. I moderated the forums just fine and thats all that should have been expected of me.

Anyways, Ive never required any of my staffers to meet a minimum post requirement. If they go inactive and dont log in for long periods of time then I might send them a PM to see whats the matter.

Only worked under Nebulous, and I've never been required to post x amount of posts per view/day/week/ or anything. Just hang out, contribute as much as I can when I can, if I have a test or something important and my attention is elsewhere, I've never felt obligated to posts, but I try to. I disagree with that rule, because that's too much obligation and a huge turnoff for sure. Members will soon discover that your posts are just for statistics, because most of the time they'll contribute without much effort or real willingness to do so. Even on the worse days, I still try to get on and at least check to see how everything is going. I may not post as much on a bad day, but on that bad, busy day, I'll get on at least once or twice a day and check to see if it's running smoothly.

I've never been required to do that either--which is a good thing. Sometimes you don't 'feel' like posting, but stop by to check on the forum. No reason to force people to post....

Well If my board would need activity then obviously staff should invest into it. So if the staff posts something instead sitting quite could make the forums better, This could get some more members as your forum would seem active.

The only thing I would expect from staff is to check in regularly and keep up with whatever is posted in staff rooms and of course any pms that get sent out for whatever reason except when a valid reason is given for being away beforehand. I would assume people would normally post on their own as staff simply because they had to like the forum enough to want to post on it in the first place.

I agree....like when I have just got home from work. I feel a bit brain dead, and I just want to sit down with a cuppa and read on the forum.....my brain is not always up to thinking and making intelligent posts, and as it is not a general chat forum, I can't just mindlessly type rubbish

When a forum has to ask this the forum is doomed. I just has this happen on another and forum where they have asked for 2 posts a day. I'm a power poster and when I saw this I felt it was a pathetic way of saying the forum is going under. I am a moderator/ assistant admin there and am deleting my account. Stupid IMO to advertise on open boards that posts need to made and a certain amount. Guests looking at such a forum are not going to sign up there. When members feel like they have to post it's time to leave.

Bluezone, you just about summed it up nicely for me. +rep right there.

I was only ever asked once to make a set amount of posts per day on a site. I was the technician on the site temporarily.

I left.

I've worked under many people, including Nebulous, and I don't remember ever having to post a certain amount a day. On the forum I'm staff at right now, I just post and post.

I try to welcome the new members, but I might miss a few every now and then.

Hey, none of us are perfect in the lines of forum administration. We're bound to make a few mistakes from time to time.

Do some degree I see it as justifiable to request for your staff members to post a respectable amount allowing the posting flow to continue however, I would never demand that my staff team reaches a certain quota of sorts. But I'd like for my staff team to show a decent amount of interest in the forums, unless of course they just assist me with subjects I am not always miraculous in.

You hire moderators to moderate. If they rarely post and only scan the forums on a regular basis looking for and dealing with problems then they are doing their jobs.

Of course, as staff, they should enjoy the community and enjoy participating it, but they shouldn't be forced to meet a minimum post requirement each time they log in.

Do you spend (or at least you used to) a lot of time around IF/ZB forums?

OT: I don't think it's unreasonable to ask your staff to post around the forum a bit. A short burst of activity can build up a lot.

I have felt like I've needed to post as a staff member - especially when I was a reviewer at FA (and my job involved posting). That's why I don't usually take on any jobs now.
