....a sign of the apocalypse, perhaps?
Users worldwide are experiencing issues connecting to Facebook and Instagram, both on the Web and via mobile apps.

It’s not clear what’s causing the outage, which first occurred around 1:10am ET. However, Facebook-owned mobile messaging service WhatsApp is running as usual.

We’ve contacted Facebook for more details and will update this post as soon as we hear back. (The Next Web)

....anyone having trouble getting into either of them?
Anyone...anyone....Bueller?!?

just tried http://facebook.com and http://instagram.com and both are down!

On a more serious note, there may have been ulterior reasons for the outage:
(Daily Telegraph) Facebook and Instagram, the social networking websites popular with users across the world, have been experiencing technical difficulties.

Facebook said on its website it was working to resolve the issues which left many forced to use Twitter to share opinions, selfies and more. Users found they could not use the social media websites or apps.
When attempting to access Facebook, users are told: "Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can."

According to IP Viking, the outage was a result of denial-of-service attack and there was speculation by some it was by the 'Lizard Squad' hacking group. AFP reported that Facebook, which also owns the Instagram service, was "aware of outage and is working on a fix".

Within a short period, #facebookdown was trending on Twitter worldwide. Even the prime minister of Finland found himself using Twitter after discovering Instagram and Facebook were down. According to reports, users in the UK and across Europe, as well as the United States and India are experiencing issues.
