Have you ever seen people pretending to be something they are not on forums?

Since we cannot see people on forums, how would we know if they were pretending to be something they are not?

All right, I admit it. I'm actually an orangutan at London Zoo, but I'm told I'm only 2% different from hoomans and I know how to type on a computtefhjksfewshfriwaurthjkfbsekjfgbn\seuikgfh\e.ngroihgp9wr9730|

I KNEW IT!!!

As Jazzy said, you can't really see people on forums, so you wouldn't know. Unless that person came out and said that they were lying and told the truth.

Yes, Ive seen people pretending to be the opposite gender. Claiming to be from somewhere they aren't. Etc. Its always funny to watch them get tripped up on their lies when they've made too many to keep track of.

A-Ha! So that's the origin of all your monkeying around!

Same here; that's the thing about forums and online communication. It's a lot easier to keep records and also a lot easier to find information online that contradict pretenders.

I've never had this happen, but I think I know what you're referring to, Nebulous. Wasn't there some incident on Forum Advertiser, as well as God knows how many other forums, where we had this ying-yang signing up multiple accounts, creating numerous forums, and causing havoc all over the place? I remember you finally called this little SOB out in the off-topic section on FA, although I don't remember quite what you said.

Anyways, I never pretend to be someone I'm not on forums. I am who I say I am, and it's wrong to lie about that stuff as nine times out of ten people will find out who you really are anyways, so it's just not worth it to even THINK of pretending otherwise.

This. The guy who pretended to be female was also in the process of opening a forum for females only.

Also someone who faked his own death, someone who made his girlfriend register too (it was just a second account he made himself) and a few other very pathetic things I can't seem to recall right now.

Oh man, one of the weirdest, most hilarious, and a slightly bit disturbing things I've seen on a forum in a psycho-social context was this member on a forum that sort of alienated himself by just being hostile to just about everyone, and then playing the victim, and then he created another account of someone that was 'interested' in him and he basically ended up hooking up with himself...in the end he deleted his own account in disgrace, lol.

That would be kind of funny. Some low-life idiot pretending to be a mere victim of circumstances, when in reality all he's doing is entertaining everyone else by begging for attention. Wow.

I dont think it makes the person a low life idiot. Perhaps he was just a bored jerk.

Well, both I would say are a bit of fair assessments, though I'd give more weight to the latter. Sometimes guys think with the wrong 'head'.

Really?

That is pretty pathetic to take advantage of people's emotions like that just because they have nothing better to do. I hope that person gets banned from every forum on the net!

This online friend I knew (only via forum), he wasn't really acting fake but performed a fake death.. as in he had his fiancee log onto his account and tell everyone about his death. However, through the detective work of our members, we found out that he couldn't have died as..

His fiancee said he died in a car accident on (location) due to heavy rain, so he couldn't see well :/. (she said the police has said that)

However with a member and the powers of the internet, it was said on the date described, at the location, there was no heavy rain so he must have seen clearly.

I can post the whole main post in quotes if you want.

It's been over a year since that post has been made, and the member has not returned, either it is true, or he is just dying to log back on but afraid to have everyone hatin' on him.

Let's see.... I seen people lie about their gender, some lied about their name, and one even faked his death.

I think the real winner a tie between the guy who not only lied about his real name but also worked his way to becoming staff on a board he helped originally crack an admin account to destroy the board and the one who faked his death, lied about his real name and created a fantasy life that he successfully kept everyone fooled for years till he confessed to everything after they caught on to the lie about being dead.

Seeing as though I'm learning about behaviour analysis, I can usually tell when people are fake since there are many ways and many behaviours that indicate that one isn't being true and faking. Also a lot of people who are fake will change their personalities a lot or their ways frequently as well. I've also noticed that when one is faking they tend to unconciously reveal themselves when they reply to a thread or when they post. Sometimes they say one thing in one thread and say another in another thread. For example, if they say they live in Toronto Canada, maybe a month or so later they will say Where I live in Ottawa is usually pretty cold

There are always ways to find if someone is fake or not. You just have to know what to look for.

I'm me online and offline. I've got nothing to prove and nothing really to hide. Although reading some of the things posted online... I am sometimes thankful that those people are only online.
