A newborn baby whose lifeless body was found in the sand-dunes of a Sydney beach has been given a family and a proper burial.
Police were unable to find the baby’s mother so her identity was unknown after being discovered on Maroubra beach in November last year.
However after hearing about the story in a local paper, Filomena D’Alessandro and her husband Bill Green decided they didn’t want the girl to be buried without a name.
Mr Green said: ‘We were at Filomena’s sister’s house and she read in the paper that the baby was going to get a destitute burial. She looked at me and said “that’s not going to happen”.
The couple decided to unofficially adopt the little girl and organized a funeral for her, they also gave her the name Lily Grace.
Both the police and the coroner’s office were happy for the funeral to go ahead, and now Lily Grace is to be the first child buried in the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park – a grave site for children who died without a family.
The married couple, who have three children of their own, now hope Lily Grace’s birth mother hears about the funeral and comes forward.

What wonderful people they are. I love the name they gave her too. RIP Lily Grace.
