Erm, MyBB 2? What's supposed to be different about it compared to the original?

They claim they're going to do a complete rewrite: throw it all out and start from scratch. MyBB is pretty old already, so it'll be interesting to see what they'll come up with.

I am really hoping it's going to be amazing, isn't it planned to be released years yet though?

I'm surprised they are going for a rewrite to be honest, considering that their core API is great. It is limiting for certain things, but their templates and plugin hooks system is great.

Maybe five years down the road, we'll see something interesting. Hopefully 1.8 will be good enough to tie us over in the MyBB community until then.

Yeah I'm looking forward to 1.8 because most of the plug-ins will still work (so I'm told).

I tested the compatibility of existing 1.6 themes on the 1.8 beta release, and I was surprised. With the exception of missing a few template features (such as the theme switcher) and a few missing icons, the compatibility was pretty good considering I'm importing them into a completely different release.

I don't expect a whole lot to need to be done to upgrade existing forums from what I've tested out so far.

Hmmm... might have to be something to keep an eye on in terms of updates. Are they going to make it advanced like that of Vbulletin and Xenforo? Or is it still going to be basic as it is now. I might never run a forum again, but I'd like to see the ease of use still in tact, especially from an admins standpoint.
