I mean the illustrated books or novels. I used to read them to my baby cousin at sleepovers at her house and currently to my 2nd cousin (my cousin's daughter). She likes "Beauty and the Beast" best. My personal favourites are : "Notre-Dame de Paris", "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Little Mermaid", the real and unmodified Danish version of it. I've cried my eyes out and a river in "Notre-Dame de Paris", by Victor Hugo" (I've had to read this for my college French classes and have written an essay on it myself afterwards as my assignment on it) and "The Little Mermaid" because the endings were so sad, and not happy at all.

Back in the '80s I had a few Disney picture books - The Black Cauldron, Sleeping Beauty, the oldies.

the endings were so sad, and not happy at all.
And grim.
