Do you mean the old Atari systems? We used to have a 5200 when I was a teenager. My mom ended up playing games on it while we were in school so she could beat our scores! I wasn't impressed but my male friends were when they came over! LOL I enjoyed playing on that system and the games could be quite difficult at times if you didn't have time to invest on figuring out good strategies. My mom found time!

It depends what you mean by mischaracterized consoles. Consoles that didn't do well? Consoles that are more obscure? Consoles that had weird features? I'm a collector, so I own a great deal of them .
I could point to consoles like the Fairchild Model F, the FM Towns Marty, the Atari XE, the Magnavox Odyssey II, the Colecovision, the Intellivision, the Sega Saturn (my favourite!), the Wii U, the Virtual Boy...all different consoles that didn't exactly do as well as they were supposed to (Coleco and Intellivision both did alright, quite popular, as was the Odyssey, but people became disillusioned with gaming around this time, and the Atari 5200 era, that eventually led to the video game crash of the 80s).
