CHICAGO â Organizers trying to bring the World Cup to the United States in 2018 or 2022 say all fields could be widened to meet international standards.
Fields at NFL stadiums are generally smaller than the 75 yards FIFA prefers. When the U.S. hosted the 1994 World Cup, several games were played on slightly narrower fields.
But U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said Friday that FIFA's World Cup inspectors were assured during this week's three-day visit that fields at all potential sites can be reconfigured.
FIFA will award the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in December. Europe is expected to get the 2018 tournament. The U.S. is up against Australia, Japan, Qatar and South Korea for 2022.
