At one point I was told that it was better to not use firewood with the bark on it in a fireplace as it increases the amount of creosote in the chimney.

Another individual told me that if the wood was properly dried it didn't matter that much.

What is your opinion on the matter?

For my woodstoves, I buy cut and split well seasoned firewood. Well seasoned firewood is easier to start, produces more heat, and burns cleaner. I have both stoves cleaned once a year and there has been very little creosote build up in the chimney pipes.

As real chimney sweeps are a rarity here, I think I'll remove the bark I can from the wood without going all OCD on it, use the driest wood I can find, and burn one of those 'cleaning logs' every so often and be done with it.
