I've wondered this question myself, It seems to have also gone to the main, mainstream compared to other sports, I myself am a basketball fan but I suppose soccer can be alright to watch.
I can say most of the countries are participating than in any other sports, as we Indians like to celebrate Cricket and loves to play from child life. I never watched the Football world cup because here it is not important than cricket for us, since our country will fail in the tier 1 only.
