How long would you run a forum unsuccessfully?
Such as not having many members and nobody to talk to, no activity, not making a profit from ad revenue, etc.

How long before you decided it was a failure and shut it down?

What would you likely do with the forum?

I know of one that was as you described that hung on for about six months.

Other than the staff bickering back and forth, and hammering on any member that dared post anything interesting, there was NO activity to speak of, and, eventually, the admin pulled the plug.

I was surprised they lasted that long. Must have been time to pay the hosting bill and they decided to let the place die.

We all go through inactive periods occasionally and I don't care about making money from ads so I'd probably unsuccessfully run a forum until there was nobody left no matter what I did. I have a feeling Jazzy will hang on to the bitter end (if it comes) so I'll always have someone to talk to, even if its just her. :P

Unmature staff,no activity, not making enough visit revoune
The amount of member that join etc

A few months, at most. I wouldn't want to come back each moth to no activity, posting basically to myself and still get no replies. To me, that seems pointless. Although I'd be trying to advertise and network, there's only so much you can do to promote your forum aside from spending money on it.

Hey, I'd be around also, Nebulous, so that'd make three people there.:)

I think it'd have to depend on my personal life.

Has the forum been unsuccessful due to me and have I not given it as much attention as it deserves, or was it never a solid idea in the first place?

Depending on this answer, I'd also have to see if I'll have much more time to put into it to turn it around in the future.

Well that is comforting. :grouphug:

Honestly, as my current project stands I will be evaluating its project about the same time I started it this year next year. If it still isn't moving forward I don't see much point in continuing on unless I have some active members.

Do you think giving up on so many projects is the reason why people don't want to commit to your forums? :|

Nebulous's got a point; even if there's not a lot of activity, just keep working at it...sometimes, the appearance of activity - to a good extent - can be just as good for a forum's success as the actual level of forum activity.

I'm going to go ahead and answer these both at the same exact time, I would agree with this and I am not completely against what is being said here, however, there has always been other things to of come about that didn't have anything to do with the actual forum itself. (What do you mean?) I mean as a younger person, basically a few years back when I last attempted a forum of my own, I had a much crappier income and I always wanted to go all out, paid hosting, domain etc. My problem in the end always ended up being the same, money. (Why didn't you ever go with a free forum hosting solution), to answer that quite frankly, I have no idea, I have always preferred full control over my entire website. The only thing I see differently about my ongoing project is this, over the years I have grown to learn many things about 1.) running a successful forum, 2.) buy only the minimal that you need for your site, 3.) if you have members that love and enjoy your forum keep it open, 4.) Keep working hard until you have lost all hope and your forum has made no progress.

I am putting a large amount of hard work and dedication into this new project and even if I can manage to get regular visitors and posters other than people simply bumping topics in the advertisement directory, aka occasionally contributing to the existing content, that in itself motivates me to keep working harder and pushing forward.

Essentially what I am saying is that Reliable Promotion is not going anywhere as long as there is at least one person that enjoys what I am working on.

:read: Apologies for the long and possibly unnecessary explanation :read:
