Forum software to start

I'm looking to start a forum, but I eventually want to take it to either IPB 3 or vB 4. Right now I'm not sure whether it'd be easier to just find a free host and setup an independent phpBB or IPB 1.3 forum or find a free host and later have to pay (something I'd rather not do).

Any advice for me?

I think doing a free host would be the best way to go. Then, as you feel more confident, and you start gaining more members and such, then you can decide whether or not you want to go to paid hosting. Although I have heard that going to advanced hosting can't be helped: This is especially true if you're on a free host and all of a sudden you get a lot of members and you need more space for everyone and more members in general. I don't know: I guess when I started owning a forum I just jumped into it without knowing what I was doing, really. But I wish you luck with whatever you decide to do, though!

SMF or phpbb would be a good forum software to start of with.

Get a free host and try being an admin for about a month or so and see if you'd like it. I recommend forumer as a free host. They provide unlimited everything.

If you've decided to go on paid hosting , use SMF as a forum software. phpbb modifications are really hard to apply if you are new to the forum industry. SMF modification system is almost like IPB's which is fairly easy. I'm not sure about vbulletin though.
