Not trying to be mean to anyone or prevent anyone from starting a type of form in this soon to be created list, but what forums (either niche or other) do you think are destined to fail even from the very beginning.

I hope my post makes since.

Andy...

Some people just aren't cut out to run a forum. I always advise those people not to create another one if they ask my opinion. Ive seen people torture themselves with their forums. They get all excited about their new forum then get disappointed after a while when it's not the overnight success they thought it would be. So they close it. Perhaps say they are done with forums for good. Then all of the sudden they are back with a brand new attitude and a new forum which will eventually be shut down because they don't have the patience or confidence needed to keep a forum going. Its a continuous cycle with some people with no end in sight.

My forum may only currently have 7 members and 480 posts, but I'm not going to give up on it

I personally think that there are already too many forums out there. And every time someone creates a new one - it's only going to be harder for them to get new members as people don't like having accounts on loads and loads of forums.

I suggest people just join an already existing forum, work hard, get a promotion and eventually be offered a co-admin position.

Same could be said 10 months ago when I created this forum but I would not have listened to that advice if someone gave it to me.

It's like the lottery. You can buy a ticket but it's unlikely you'll win. I think you got the winning ticket Nebulous.

Agreed.

I think it's when you make a specific topic forum only. Such as a gardening forum. How many people are really into just gardening? Forums are a dime a dozen and the ones, IMO, that are most likely to make it are the general discusssion forums.

I don't agree, there are too many general chat boards out there and only a few actually make it. When it comes to genres like that it's indeed like a lottery. IMO a gardening forum can succeed a lot more easily if you advertise in the right spots (gardening related sites/forums).

I think it's when you're directing your advertising towards members that aren't into it..you really have to know what you're doing if you're going to do something like make a gardening forum. Like sports forums and stuff..

The ones that make a bunch of promises that they can't keep...right from the start. It's one of the worst things you can do. Oh, and those forums that start out big.

You have to be willing to grow with your forum. Start out small, learn as you go, and continue to improve it over time.

You have to find a niche and offer something that NOBODY else offers. That's how you can get a successful forum.
