Forums Without Legends

Forums without legends bother me.

I have to go member by member seeing who is who and what they do. I usually see who's in charge of a forum before I join it, but when there's no legend, I usually don't bother.



What are your thoughts ? Do you find it annoying when you see several contrasting colors on the Who Is Online and you have no idea who is who?

I just added one like a week or two ago because I thought people would like to see it.



I dont think we ever had one on this forum before. We only have 3 colored usergroups here so it wouldnt take long to figure who who is who. If a forum had a whole bunch of user groups, it would be very confusing if there was no legend.

I never bother adding them. Nobody has ever asked me who's who anyways.

I might be the lone girl out here, but I've never cared about status or legends on the internet. I might be like a cat ... online ... I go where I want to go and I do what I want to do, say what I want to say. I've never needed validation online. The legend we are talking about is just the part on the index page under the Active Users list that says:

Nothing personal, but I don't pay much attention to who is who on any given forum. Some might enjoy the status, but it's something I'm indifferent to. That said, I like the atmosphere here. Calm, mellow, fun and no heavy-handed moderation. Nice.

I think whether a forum needs a legend or not probably depends on what kind of forum it is. For example, if it's a general chat forum, like this one or mine, it wouldn't really matter if you had a legend or not, since there's really only 3 member groups: Administrators, Moderators, Registered Users and sometimes VIPs for an added bonus. Although I think it would be more beneficial on a business related forum like an advertisement forum. But on the other hand, now days most forum softwares have it where even if you don't have a legend, you can usually tell what a particular member does on the forum based on their username and the title underneath it. So it really depends on a lot of things.

I'm on the other hand where I like a 'classless' forum where it feels like a real community. People get noticed not by a lousy status/legend/rank but by the quality of the posts and discussions one brings...

It bothers me sometimes but then I got to the forum leaders page.
