Do you prefer to be on forums on free hosts (proboards, forumotion, etc) or do you prefer to be on forums that use paid hosting and maybe a premium software like Xenforo? Maybe none of it matters to you and you just join because of the content and people there?

From the perspective of being a regular member, I don't really care what hosting or software a board uses. As long as I can figure out how to type out a post and submit it, thats all that matters.
From an owner's standpoint, obviously I prefer hosting and maintaining software myself.

What made you choose the SMF software? What do you like about it?
Would you do a XenForo forum? IPB?
Maybe if I knew my way around hosting a self-hosted board. I've never done much with hosting myself.
Its not too hard to learn. I can do it and I'm no rocket scientist
I'm sure it isn't, but as a general hobby, I don't mind free software at this time.
