Do you think its a good idea for forum admin's to hire their friend as staff members?

Admin's that hire their friends need to be very careful. A disagreement could end the friendship. That could cause the friend to retaliate and the community then suffers.

I think the best staff members come from the community. Members who have proved themselves to be reliable, fair and contribute to the growth of the community. Other members know these staff members and feel comfortable going to them for help or advice.

I don't think people should be hired to a position because they are chummy with the staff.

I'd say I'm friends with the staff here. I got to know most of them on a friend level AFTER they were promoted to staff though.

Hiring someone just because they are your friend can be done if the admin wants.. Just make sure that they can do the job and act appropriately when its time to handle issues.

In my expirence of having a friend as a fellow admin. We had a massive bust up and that was the end of that. I chose people from the community, however I have become friends with since.

In some cases it is better because you can trust your friends more than you can trust someone who replied to your hiring thread. This does not mean that you should hire your friends if they have no foruming experience. If they know how to do the job your thinking of giving them and you can trust them it has a lot of advantages but sometimes it is better to hire from your community as has been said further up if you have a fall out, they could get revenge by destroying the forum, you just have to hope your friends are past that childish level. I wouldn't hire any of my real life friends because they have no experience on forums whatsoever. I've taught a few of them just how to make a topic, that was a big leap for them, I never needed help I just worked it out and if they can't work it out themselves I don't believe they have the natural talent for foruming which is why I wouldn't hire my friends. Phew! That was a long reply.

Rose Swan and me are friends and she moderates my new forum. I find it better to have a friend as a staff member than someone who you have little to no clue of as a friend is more helpful as they know the idea of the forum and the type of thing I want on my forum. Having people that don't really know me has problems as then they want and they have different ways of running forums.

If my friend joined my forum I would probably give him priority if I needed one.

I have no problem hiring a friend to be a staff member on a forum or project as long as I trust him/her enough to actually do the work and not take advantage of our friendship.

Sometimes in the beginning stages of a forum, friends will be the ones to help admin/moderate your forum. As long as you set the ground rules from the beginning that should help everyone know they're roll.

I would say as long as they also know what they're doing, and as long as you know they wouldn't turn evil if something were to happen.

I have a friend as my staff on my forum, we've known each other for years and we first met on my previous forum.
