If a member has been permanently banned from a forum, should they ever be given a second chance? What would be the circumstances for that to happen?

100% agree with Smooth!

Perma-ban sounds like an anti-persperant.... or maybe something to contol ants in the kitchen.

And, besides, if a user has been banned, they had probably been warned, and counseled, and given a second, and even third chance, BEFORE they were banned.

Right?

Right?
Right.

Unless they were bots.

Second chances are for people who haven't been permabanned.

No. Perm bans normally given for serious offences or after several short term bans. In which case it should not be not be over turned. Ever.

IMO, If users are forgiven for their consequence (getting perma banned), then they will think they can do it again and get away with it. Some users learn, some users will only abuse their second chance and create more work for the admins.

I'll confess... I gave two eternally-banned members a second chance but that was when one contacted me on YouTube saying that he was really for what he did and the other made a new account to make an apology. When I knew they have changed their ways, they were allowed back in. However, there are some banned members on my forum that won't be given a second chance... not in a million years.

If someone really wants to rejoin our forum, maybe a new persona would be good for them. IP changes are easy, not to say you should do that.. But I know I have caught members circumventing the ban that way. If I do catch 'em, new IP is perma banned.

But I mean, if they changed that much, you wouldn't realize it's them with a new username and IP.

Nope. They were banned for a reason, and to go back on that and let them back in basically condones what they did in the first place. People don't change. Why allow the potential for more hassle to happen on your board? You made your decision to ban them. Stick to it.

Seems more harsh than it does brutal honesty, and I'm only saying this because People don't change is such a difficult belief for me to fathom, because for me, it seems obvious that they can and do, and everybody does eventually over time.

I think it's on a case by case basis. Some members have the capacity and willingness to change their behavior others don't.

Further, I believe everyone deserves second chances. I agree with Nicholas in that everything and everyone changes in life - Hereclitus (change is the only constant in life).

Well in some cases I've seen members who had been banned & given a second chance change & really try to make up for it by being a good member, obeying all forum rules & staying out of trouble. Although in most cases they just return to flame & troll. I think that an admin's/mod's decision to judge that person matters a lot. If the judgement is wise & then they turn out to be good after the second chance, then it won't hurt. Or if the admin/mod judges the person to be a lunatic, & don't give em another chance, then they're running their forums pretty efficiently.

I think before giving perma bans, week bans or a month ban should be given. That outta change em straight away if they've got to. Perma bans should be used for a last & final resort when there's no hope.
