Going to college or flipping burgers?

I see.. So there is suddenly no longer a need for police officers, construction workers, repair men, plumbers, bus drivers, truck drivers, rail road workers, Electricians, Mechanics, Pilots, Crane Operators, Mail Carriers, Carpenters, Prison Guards, Roofers, Painters, Secretaries, Chefs, Welders, Pest Control, Brick Layers, Real Estate Agents, Actors/ Actresses, groundskeepers, Maintenance Men, Security Guards, Travel Agents, Bank Tellers, Tailors, Probation Officer, Fireman, Taxi Driver, Store Owner/Manager, Farmer, Engineers, , etc, etc, etc, etc, and I could list several hundred other jobs that pay well and require minimal training/certification and no college.

Just because you have degree in something doesn't mean you are going to have a perfect future which will land you that wonderful job and give you a happy life that you've always dreamed of. Many people who are working jobs I listed above will make more money than you will ever make and are very happy in their lives. College only one option, but to say that you will be a bum and working at Mc Donalds if you don't go is just plain ignorant.

Hey hey, I was talking about high school drop outs getting a job...

You must admit the current situation for such people is VERY bleak.

And despite the fact that all people could have a better job than a garbage man or cab driver, nowadays with current technology we NEED people to fill those jobs, because they provide a useful service to society.

For me college is the path that will lead to my satisfaction in my life. I have never said that all people must go get a higher education to be successful/happy. And I never said that money = happiness.

Sheesh. I hope that fireball wasn't directed at me.

my grandfather never even graduated from high school, and he owns an insurance company.

Im not trying to disagree with anyone here, but one thing I've noticed is that it was way easier back in the day to get a great job without education then it is now. If people with the same amount of education that got a job as an engineer or something back then (minimal education) tried to to get the same job today, it'd be a lot more difficult, and obviously the person with more education would get the job. No disrespect or anything, just what I think - But yes, the title can be offending.

Its hard for anyone to get a job. Even with a degree in something. You just have to be persistant. Sometimes you have to go through 5 or 6 blind alleys in life before you find the road to success.

That's very true! A friend of mine - he's so smart, mechanical engineer and even he can't find a job because people are just so tight economicly - they don't want to hire people who have such high paying jobs. I guess it all depends - and also somewhat on your luck

Right now it depends on what field you majored in, as some industries are getting hit harder than others.

I agree. My grandpa never went to college and neither did my uncle and they both own big houses and nice cars. There is lots of jobs out there that pay extremely well without needing a degree.

How long ago was that?

I'm in college now and I'm determined to at least achieve my Masters Degree in my field of interest. But those who feel that college isn't for them, it's alright. Everyone is different and everyone has different skills and talents. If those skills and talents can help you achieve your goals and you enjoy doing whatever you're doing, then kudos.

Education is important though. I always advice my friends to get at least a degree before doing anything else but it doesn't really bother me if people without a certificate is earning big bucks.

Thats today.. They own a construction company. They get like $500 an hour when they work.

When did they established that company? If they started that construction company during this times of economic hardship, they should write an article or something on how to earn money like that.

I dont know, a few years ago... It doesnt really matter. The point is people can make good money without a college degree.. They can make good money with a college degree. Or you could fail by taking either path. Thats just how life goes..

I agree with Nebulous. You don't need a college degree to get a good job, there are plenty of jobs out there if you didn't go to college, you can work your way up, you could learn for yourself with a hands on experience, you don't always need to pay someone to help you learn something you could do if you join a company and do work experience or something with them.

I personally aren't going to a college, i have left school now, I'm 15 and am going to a hands on school which teaches you everything that you would learn in college and more and it's not hard to get into.

I don't understand why people think you NEED college to get a good job, plenty of successful people didn't go to college and still got a great job and have a great life, it's just now days people teachers in schools seem to put it into kids heads if you don't do well in life and get straight A's you will fail and have a shitty job. It's not like that.

I personally was told i wouldn't be able to get into the course i am doing at the moment unless i finished school, and guess what, i got in. Sure proved them wrong.

But yeah, in my opinion you don't need to go to college to have a good life and have lots of money, you just need to work hard at what ever works for you and you shouldn't go on what other people tell you.

I agree that you don't need a college degree to get a job, it just makes getting a job easier. Also, if you receive education in whatever field you're interested in addition to the skills and talents you already have, you'll be able to promote yourself more successfully than just having the skills and talents.

That is not necessarily true. Its true in some cases but not in others.

Of course you don't need a degree to get a well-paying job, but IMO it sure makes it a lot easier.

Trust me, more people would rather spend four years in college than start something from scratch.

College is the way to go for most people, but it is not for everyone. One thing I can truly, honestly say is that some of the most underpaid people are some of the nicest, wholesome people I've ever met. If you have the smarts and can afford to go to college, give it crack at it, but if you're less fortunate than others, you still can make it through and be successful in your own way without college. See, the fact is, when you see these construction workers building a condo, you may think they're doing the job just because they can't afford to go to college, which may be true, but building/construction requires a lot of good math skills. As I've said before, you can go to college, which I'd recommended, but if you end up graduating and getting a job for the money, you're not going to be happy because you're going to have to work all the time and you'll miss the most important years of your life being down all the time. As far as the debate goes, I am all for college, because my dad was the first to go to college, and has been successful. My brother just started college this past Monday. However, college isn't for everyone, but that does not mean they're going to go no where in life.

Just so I can clear one thing up.. McDonalds doesn't flip their burgers and I have worked there 2 years and as a manager there making plenty of money... to live on. Not the best if your raising a family but single, no kids, no house, and still with parents was a dream to me lol.

I got laid off, and I actually am thinking about driving a taxi, however, not my entire life. They do make a good amount of money, so don't go dissing the taxi service haha..

I think it's just about the money and that piece of paper that says you did something.

I do play on going to college once I can get back on my feet, and then hopefully find myself doing something easy and fun for myself. I don't care about the money just as long as I can have fun, and support myself and whomever I am with.
