...you know, we coulda' had a Surgeon General by now if Congress weren't so damned beholden to domestic terrorists such as the National Rifle Association...
It has been nearly a year since Vivek Murthy was nominated by President Obama to serve as the next Surgeon General, but thanks in large part to the gun lobby and their Republican allies in the Senate, there has yet to be any movement on his confirmation.

That vacancy has become a central focus in the last week as government officials and medical professionals try to calm the public about the spread of Ebola.
On Sunday, Meet the Press host Chuck Todd asked Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) about the NRA’s role in blocking Murthy’s confirmation, but the Republican senator dismissed the question outright.

Blunt blamed the vacancy on President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), who has yet to put Murthy’s nomination to a full vote, and dismissed questions about the National Rifle Association’s efforts to block the nominee. “The NRA said they were going to score the vote and suddenly everybody froze him,” said Chuck Todd. “That seems a little petty in hindsight, does it not?”

“Well, the president really ought to nominate people that can be confirmed to these jobs, and frankly then we should confirm them, there’s no question about that,” replied Blunt.

Earlier this year, the NRA launched a campaign to derail Murthy’s nomination because he voiced support for expanding background checks for gun purchases. His comments that gun violence was a public health concern raised the ire of the gun lobby and conservative lawmakers despite the fact that every major medical association — and several former Surgeons General under Republican presidents — shared the same view.

Todd questioned the wisdom of giving the NRA any kind of influence over the country’s top public health position, but Blunt rejected the notion that the NRA played any role in Murthy’s confirmation. “I’m not sure that’s why, you’d have to ask Senator Reid why he hasn’t move that to the top of his list to be confirmed.”

After the NRA began publicly opposing Murthy’s nomination, several of Blunt’s Republican colleagues including Rand Paul, John Cornyn and John Barrasso said they too would move to block Murthy’s nomination, and Paul placed a hold on the nomination.

Lawmakers and health experts have expressed concern over the lack of a Surgeon General to craft a unified response to the ebola diagnoses, leading to confusion that has helped fuel public fear of the virus, fear that is largely unfounded.
Blunt told Todd that he thinks we need a surgeon general. But asked if he would vote for Murthy’s confirmation, Blunt again refused to answer the question and blamed the administration. “Until this came up, frankly I’ve heard very little discussion about the Surgeon General,” he said.(Think Progress)

...and people wonder why I consider the NRA - and its' members, quite frankly - to be nothing more than domestic terrorists and enablers for domestic terrorists...this is but one reason why. *looks around* ...and no, I won't apologize for that statement either.

to be fair for everyone, everyone can be considered a terrorist, domestic or foreign...

Or the president could come up with a list of alternatives and say can we sit down and see if we can make any of these people work. You know come across the aisle and all that stuff the leftists love preaching.

if one chooses a person that one believes is the best option why would one need to find alternatives? :|

Because congress who the people voted in do not think he is the best option. Both sides are doing what they think is right. Now it's our dear leaders job to lead and see about alternatives.

It does not matter right now because they have made there decision.

I have no idea but if a certain dictator was open to talks we would find out.

Don't worry about it. When I hear comments like that it just keeps motivating me to make sure that check goes out for my NRA renewal every year for the fight to continue on my absolute rights.

since when did the NRA completely represent gun rights and the people that support gun rights?

I'm for gun rights, does that mean i have to be an NRA member now? :S

Who said completely?

But if we didn't have the NRA our gun rights would have been far less by now.

I, too, stand firm for gun rights, and no you don't have to be an NRA member....

It seems to me, that the person most responsible, in us not having a Surgeon General, is the very one, who has not put the Nominee up for a vote yet.....And that person is Harry Reid. Like you say, he's the Senate Majority Leader, and he should have had this done long before now, but.....He's still twiddling his thumbs....

The NRA is all about gun safety....They stand up for the right of citizens.....You're so against them, I take it you don't own a gun, or guns......

The time is coming, when we, right here in the U.S.A. are going to be going up against what Iraq is up against.....Isis....Or groups like them.....Jihadist, Islamics, Al-qaeda , all known as Muslims, all terrorist......And, those who don't have guns, are going to wish they had.....

Do I have a gun? You bet I do.....9 mm Rutger.....And you can be sure that I will use it, if I have to......
