Guilded > Owning a Forum

It does seem to have proper forum sections as a normal forum would. Not as extensive as a proper forum software like XF or IPB but the basics are there. It's definitely weird to navigate around and get used to though.
Maybe having all of them tools don't seem to fit, for example, discord now made a thread widget for keeping track and guess what.. nobody cares about that lol.

Why bother using a forum when all you do is VC chat with your buddies.

Yeah, it was enabled for community servers recently so I was messing around with it on my Discord Bot server. I don't like it. They made it even worse by making the content "disappear" after a certain period of time. No idea what that actually means.

And if you aren't a Nitro member, that time period is like 24 hours which is useless.

Hell a very cheap option to run though

Yeah, very cheap and probably better than using those free forum options if someone doesn't have the budget to run their own forum. Only issue is if it's a successful forum, you have no way out from them.

I'm sticking with Xenforo. Just can't upgrade to 2.x because of mods and custom template stuff. :dancing-pug:

I haven't used Guilded, but my impression is that it's basically Discord with better organisation. Which means pretty much everything listed in the article "The problem with Discord" is likely still true of Guilded:

The Problem with Discord

In particular:

How do you find information about a topic online?

Usually, it’s through search engines like Google. You type in a term (like say, ‘speedrunning tactics for Super Mario Odyssey’) and up pops information on message boards, social media sites and wikis detailing what to do. It’s simple, efficient and doesn’t annoy anyone in the slightest.

Discord (and similar solutions) however, they kill this possibility stone dead. Now Google has no access to the community at all, there’s no easy way to look up what’s been posted before and those who don’t want to be part of a walled garden… well they’re just locked out of the loop. It’s killing the usability of communities as a whole and making things far more difficult than they used to be.

As far as I'm aware, Guilded has the same 'private' setup as Discord, so the content can only be viewed by members of the community, and none of it shows up in Google search results. Thus, it doesn't resolve the main reasons why I think Discord is an unsatisfactory replacement for forums (add-on, yes, but really not good as a complete replacement)
