Classroom teachers could stop school shootings by carrying concealed weapons, say gun-rights advocates who plan to offer the required training Thursday for 200 Utah teachers.

The Utah Shooting Sports Council said it would waive its $50 fee for concealed-weapons training for the teachers. Instruction featuring plastic guns was to start Thursday inside a conference room at Maverick Center, a hockey arena in the Salt Lake City suburb of West Valley.

It's an idea gaining traction in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shooting.

In Ohio, the Buckeye Firearms Association said it was launching a test program in tactical firearms training for 24 teachers initially.

Schools are some of the safest places in the world, but I think teachers understand that something has changed -- the sanctity of schools has changed, said Clark Aposhian, one of Utah's leading gun instructors. Mass shootings may still be rare, but that doesn't help you when the monster comes in.

Gun-rights advocates say teachers can act more quickly than law enforcement in the critical first few minutes to protect children from the kind of shooting that left 20 children and six adults dead Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

What are your thoughts about teachers carrying concealed weapons?

Teachers are there to teach and are underpaid to begin with. Now they want teachers to carry firearms? What good will this do when the shooter can come in any unsecured entrance and start blasting away?

Are you assuming that there is an armed teacher in every single classroom? If they are IN the classroom, then how would they put down the shooter before he/she has already killed on his/her way INTO the school. Also, what stops a teacher (who has no real skills with a firearm) from shooting at will when they think a student or another person may be a threat? The key here, IMO, is to stop the psychos from entering the schools to begin with. How? Metal detectors and armed (highly trained) professionals patrolling the school grounds both inside and out. There are plenty of retired Police Officers, Security Guards, Military Personnel, etc. that could use the extra income and they at least come with the skills needed to get the job done.

Instead of arming teachers........

If it is good enough for those in DC.....

Some interesting news has broken in the wake of the latest push for gun control by President Obama and Senate Democrats: Obama sends his kids to a school where armed guards are used as a matter of fact.

The school, Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC, has 11 security officers and is seeking to hire a new police officer as we speak.

...

The larger point is that this is standard operating procedure for the school, period. And this is the reason people like NBC's David Gregory send their kids to Sidwell, they know their kids will be protected from the carnage that befell kids at a school where armed guards weren't used (and weren't even allowed).
