According to a new study published in PLoS One, racism is correlated with both gun ownership and support of legislation on the right to carry concealed weapons. Specifically, the British and Australian authors examined the racism of white people in America towards black people in America.

The authors drew upon a representative U.S. sample from data collected in the American National Election study. They statistically analyzed attitudes towards gun ownership along with other variables such as age, gender, education, income, political affiliation, location and whether they owned a gun. To measure a person’s degree of racism, they examined responses to questions about the stereotype of blacks as being violent.

The analysis revealed that for every 1 point increase in the racism ranking, there was a 50 percent increase in the chance that the person owned a gun. Additionally, there was a nearly 30 percent increase in the chance that that person would also support the right to carry concealed guns. These results held true even after controlling for conservative politics, being from the South and harboring anti-government sentiments and other factors, Discovery News reports.

“Attitudes towards guns in many US whites appear to be influenced, like other policy preferences, by illogical racial biases,” the authors conclude. “The present results suggest that gun control policies may need to be implemented independent of public opinion.”

Debate Statement: Gun ownership = Racism

"The analysis revealed that for every 1 point increase in the racism ranking, there was a 50 percent increase in the chance that the person owned a gun."

In other words, they might own a gun, they might not.

I don't support gun legislation in its entirety (I believe there need to be more stringent restrictions on the types of weapon allowed, and tougher examinations/tests on those who wish to own one) but this is laughable.

According to the study there is a link between them, that doesn't mean that every gun enthousiast is racist. TBH I can perfectly imagine the findings being correct. I'm not interested enough to go read the whole detailed paper though.

Just because a lot of people who own guns happen to be racist, that doesn't mean all gun owners are.

"You have the right to be a victim"

At least that appears to be the message here:

With the national media spotlight on them, two Gonzaga University roommates put on school probation for violating a weapons policy said they’ll appeal the sanction.

Seniors Erik Fagan and Daniel McIntosh faced suspension or expulsion after one of them chased an aggressive intruder from their apartment at gunpoint. Instead, they’ll remain on probation for the rest of their time at Gonzaga, the university informed them Sunday by letter.

“It was a little bit of a surprise,” Fagan said Sunday. “We’re happy that we are still here at Gonzaga. Our objective was to remain here because we do love this school and love being here.”

Two seniors from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington were placed on indefinite probation Sunday after pulling a gun to defended themselves when a six-time felon attempted to enter their apartment.

And believing so means you are at odds with the stated beliefs of Our Beautiful President:

FactCheck: Yes, Obama endorsed Illinois handgun ban
Obama was being misleading when he denied that his handwriting had been on a document endorsing a state ban on the sale and possession of handguns in Illinois. Obama responded, “No, my writing wasn’t on that particular questionnaire. As I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns.”

Actually, Obama’s writing was on the 1996 document, which was filed when Obama was running for the Illinois state Senate. A Chicago nonprofit, Independent Voters of Illinois, had this question, and Obama took hard line:

35. Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assault weapons? Yes.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes.

Obama’s campaign said, “Sen. Obama didn’t fill out these state Senate questionnaires--a staffer did--and there are several answers that didn’t reflect his views then or now. He may have jotted some notes on the front page of the questionnaire, but some answers didn’t reflect his views.”
