LONDON – WikiLeaks supporters struck back Wednesday at perceived enemies of founder Julian Assange, attacking the websites of Swedish prosecutors, the Swedish lawyer whose clients have accused Assange of sexual crimes and the Swiss authority that froze Assange's bank account.

MasterCard, which pulled the plug on its relationship with WikiLeaks on Tuesday, also seemed to be having severe technological problems.

The online vengeance campaign appeared to be taking the form of denial of service attacks in which computers across the Internet are harnessed — sometimes surreptitiously — to jam target sites with mountains of requests for data, knocking them out of commission.

*Update*

LONDON -Hackers rushed to the defense of WikiLeaks on Wednesday, launching attacks on MasterCard, Swedish prosecutors, a Swiss bank and others who have acted against the site and its jailed founder Julian Assange.

So-called hacktivists operating under the label Operation Payback claimed responsibility in a Twitter message for causing severe technological problems at the website for MasterCard, which pulled the plug on its relationship with WikiLeaks a day ago.

MasterCard acknowledged a service disruption involving its Secure Code system for verifying online payments. It was not clear how widespread the problem was. Earlier, MasterCard spokesman James Issokson said consumers could still use their credit cards for secure transactions.

Assange should be charged with treason and hung for what he did.

bit difficult to do that.................australia dosnt have the death penalty and its only treason if you do it against your own government

I don't blame them. They are defending what they loved, and they were wrong to get rid of wikileaks in the first place

Wrong??? They were wrong to get rid of top secret government information? Why the hell would they be wrong to do that????

When you defend something or someone, it shouldn't matter how harsh the punishment might be.

Look, these hackers want to defend wikileaks because if you look it up, so many people loved it. They loved the content in the site and hate to see it go.

The government can't just take whatever they want from us unless it hurts someone. As far as I know, nobody is hurt

Exactly, so many people in the U.S. want to ...charge him with High Treason..., but erm...he's not from the U.S., and wikileaks is not an Australian entity, it is hosted by a foreign webserver (Swiss now, these days, if I'm not mistaken?). He's merely an administrator of the entity. So many legal loopholes to dive through.

Haha when I heard this I thought it was awesome, fighting the NWO if there is one it seems. Assange was brought up on bogus charges.

I also like how many many mirror sites have been setup to provide the same information as wikileaks regardless if wikileaks itself is attcked cyborially.

What country do you live in? My government takes exactly what it wants, regardless if it is harmful or not, regardless of what the people want, regardless of our Constitution. Politicians these days use our Constitution as asswipe.

I'd like to live wherever you do where the governement is actually for the people.

And if you're going to ask what they take, I can start with all the exorbitant taxes they take from us, unwillingly.

I never said that government didn't take whatever they want, I'm saying they don't have the full right to do that, but they can because the government can do whatever.

I was simply stating that these hackers have seen that the government has done enough of this and they took action.
