Hacking group Anonymous plotting to 'kill' Facebook

A splinter group from the notorious hacker collective Anonymous is rumoured to be gathering support for a plan to kill online social networking giant Facebook.



A YouTube video labelled as a message from Anonymous claimed that Operation Facebook would take place on November 5. its aim was to destroy the social network on the grounds that it abused the privacy of users, the video said.



But an Anonymous spokesman told AFP that even heads of the group were uncertain how seriously to take the threat since the loosely-knit organisation doesn't have a strict command structure and members mask their identities.



I found groups of people who say we absolutely are and have a trick up our sleeves, said the spokesman. I found others that say it isn't us and that this is stupid.



The video displayed a gray image of the Anonymous logo as a digitally masked voice announced a plan to destroy Facebook and called for others to join in the cyber attack.



The video accused Facebook of holding onto the data people post in accounts and of even sharing some of it with law enforcement agencies.



Join the cause and kill Facebook for the sake of your own privacy, the speaker urged in the video, which has been viewed more than a million times since being posted three weeks ago.

A cadre within Anonymous was evidently trying to rally cyber warriors in a Facebook attack, but the plan did not have the backing of the majority of the group, according to the spokesman.



A message on an Anonops account at microblogging service Twitter acknowledged that some members of the group were organising a Facebook attack but that didn't mean the sentiment was unanimous.



This could be as dumb as one person making a video or as big as someone having already broken into the Facebook network, said the Anonymous spokesman.



Facebook declined a request for comment.

Wouldn't surprise me at all to find out they have already broken into the Facebook network. I'm not a member of Facebook and never will be. So many of my friends have had their accounts hacked that I've even lost count. No thank you is what I say.

Anonymous just come across as the most bad-ass compilation of trolls ever sometimes to the point we forget they're really kinda stupid, but they're not really something to be taken seriously, they've said it hundreds of times, they're doing it for the lulz. The idea of them representing freedom of speech and privacy is hysterical in the fact that some of the things they've done have been hurting freedom of speech and revealing some people's privacy.

Incorrect, Anonymous is a group, yes, there name is a concept but it's also the name of their group, and I don't believe they're going to actually take down Face Book. I went ahead and actually researched everything they're credited for doing and honestly, they may have taken sites down for about an hour but there has never been reported of them actually taking a website down for good and nothing they've taken down so far is moderately of the same mass that Face Book is.

It doesn't have to be a united whole, and I'm sure that the prominent members of Anonymous have much more ways of communicating besides the website, as you see several members of Anonymous wearing their masks in rallies and so on.

They've given the date of when something was going to happen and then went ahead and DID it before, it's to build anticipation and to strike somewhat intimidation. They want more publicity to get their message across, and it comes across better if they say they're going to do something beforehand and then praise themselves over saying they did something after. It isn't dumb considering that this will merely cause them to arm themselves more heavily, that's all they can do to stop it and anonymous believes they can get past it.
