I found myself in a discussion with a woman at work whom I usually don't talk to, and there is a reason, but it happened anyway.

She openly despises all things under the general banner of Science Fiction, and once asked me why I don't write 'real books'.

OK, that's her.

Yesterday, she was in the break room talking about how they decorated their house for Halloween.

I entered the conversation with excuse me and tried to be reasonable about the whole thing.

She could not see any connection between the modern celebration of death and evil, and her inflatable pumpkin and black and orange bunting, and the general topic of 'Science Fiction'. She admitted even having a plastic witch riding a broom hanging from the tree in their front yard, but to her, it was just 'halloween'.

I love people. I really do.

So... do you halloween?

I do not halloween. No one in this town gets children knocking on doors. This town has what is called Safe Night. The children are brought down to what we call the waterfront district. All the stores along the waterfront give out candy and other treats. It's been a tradition here way before I even moved to this town. I think it's a great idea and atleast the children are in a safe and controlled environment.

I sort of do. Mainly for my nieces and nephews, and younger cousins though. I don't actively do anything if it's not with them. I disagree with most activities partaken for Halloween, especially since where I live it's mainly thugs who threaten to put a brick through your window if you don't cough up.

And they say Devon is a nice place...

trick or treating doesn't really exist here. The only thing we do are the costume parties.
