Do you have a handy knife? A knife you have for whatever and whenever. I have this small pocket knife that I bought a few years ago, back when I used to fish a lot, and ever since, it has been great to me. I've only managed to poke myself and draw a little blood a few times, but for the most part I've been safe and have put the sharp blade to good once. Just used it to cut off one of those tags off my clothes.

It is a knife. There is a big knife crime here. I was going to say in the big cities but actually there have been a few people in my town stabbed....Down chav central (nightclub area)

Ive heard about stabbings in England.. We dont really have that problem here. People get shot a lot though.

Anyways, I carry a knife. Only because I work in a dangerous drug and crime infested neighborhood after dark. Ive only pulled it out once but I didn't cut the person. Just seeing it was enough make them back off.

It's not nice at all. My dad has a pocket knife but keeps it at home.

I never go down the road with all the nightclubs on.. Even though there is a great metal club down there.. Quite alot of people have been killed.

A couple of months ago the guy who has MOTd my car for the past 4 years got stabbed be someone carrying a pocket knife.. I dont think people should own them unless they have a good reason ....Don't know what that might be.

I have a SOG Knife, Paratrooper, to be precise. It's good. I had a Victornox Swiss Army Knife as well, but it's old so it's being retired. Next on the list: Leatherman Wave, Black Oxide Style

Let's not stereotype people for a minute. Re-evaluate the situation. What do you think?

I think Im not stereotyping anyone. I was describing most people who have messed with me. Crackheads and gang members are usually the ones who will try to fight / harm you for no reason and/or rob you.

Anyways if you chose to be defenseless in a situation where a weapon could have saved you then that's your choice. Dont think if you just hand over whatever you have, they will just say Thank you and walk away... I know I would rather get myself out of a situation instead of being killed or be seriously hurt because someone wanted the $20 in my wallet.

Of course Im only talking about extreme situations when there is no other options. Most of the time you can just duck into a room /building, get in your car (if you are near it), get to somewhere where other people are, or whatever else and call the police or just wait for them to leave.

I'm sure I'll be able to live without it.

And if I'm ever confronted, using it would be a crime.
As Nebulous said, self defense in America isn't a crime. But if I were going to defend myself--my weapon of choice would be a pistol, not a knife.

Anyhow--I use my knife for a boxcutter, to cut the insulation off wires, to tighten screws (some), as a letter opener, clean out my nails, and tons of other things that I can't think of right now. In the summer time, I always have a knife in my pocket (sometimes a leatherman) and there's always a knife in my purse....it's a small bone handled pen knife that was my grandmothers.
