Scenario:

You are living with your family in a scarce, poverty-stricken country. Where you live, there is no food bank, and you and your family are starving to death. One day, you are out trying to find some sort of food to nourish your family, when something miraculous (or problematic) occurs. You find a huge sack full of money that has fallen off the back of a truck. You realize this would be a fortune to your family, but there is one obvious catch. This money has to belong to someone else, and to take it and use it for your family would be stealing. You could explain your situation to the rightful owner of the money, but how can you know he’ll be a generous person? Would you:

a. Return the money to its rightful owner or

b. Take the money and use it to help your family.

If my family was starving to death then I would take the money. The odds of them finding out who found the bag are slim to none. They had bags of money not secured on the truck. Oh well, their misfortune just saved my family.

Why would any reasonable person choose to return the money?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

If I can ID the owner then I return it. If I can't then I keep it. My morals don't take a vacation when they get inconvenient. If they did then what would be the point of having any to begin with?

BTW, the mentality of screw everyone else as I come first may sound nice until it gets used against you. Not exactly something I would prescribe to as I wouldn't want to get the short end of the stick in regards to that line of logic but that's just me.

Besides, how would such a poor family explain the sudden windfall without telling the truth about where that money came from? Furthermore, who would believe you just so happened to come across a bag of money that fell off of a truck and not think you just stole it?

Who, in this day and age, actually walks around with bags of money? o.O

Oh please.

Yeah, the FBI is really running around planting bags of money here and there to see who reacts how to finding it.
You should totally do that as a prank

Considering this scenario is in a poverty stricken country then it is only reasonable to conclude that money came from organized crime and it is never wise to take money that isn't yours when it is owned by organized criminals. They usually don't take it well and they will more likely then not be looking for it and the fool who decided he could take it.
