Harsher penalties for animal abuse & cruelty

Am I the only one who thinks animal abusers get off too easily even though they do the most cruel and disgusting things? The worst penalty is usually 2 years in prison and up to some dozens of dollars but usually abusers get off without any prison time. What do you guys think?

oh hell no. i have friends who would like to see some of these people executed for it.

one of the reasons that the sentencing isn't harsher is that the system doesn't give the same moral weight to violating an animals rights as a similar violation to a human. for instance, nobody is going to get busted for hitting and kicking their animals in a less than brutal fashion, but if you just walk up a smack a human in a way that's commonly acceptable to people who condone that sort of thing done to an animal, you could go to jail for an assault.

Well, anyone who willfully and joyfully abuses of an animal would do the same to a person if they knew the person could not defend themselves (animals make easier targets lacking the ability to fight back) and if they could get away with the crime (a crime on a person is more thoroughly investigated and carries bigger penalties than harming animals), and thus we could conclude this person is both a threat and a danger to society and it'd be best if society rid of this person.

With that in mind, we could argue that if someone would be willing to kill an animal with malicious intent, they would certainly do the same to a person.

I agree wholeheartedly and then some. To me, it's like abusing a defenseless infant. And if the animal fights back, chances are they're going to get put down if no one else was around to see the abuse. In any case, I think animal abusers need much harsher punishments, fines, more jail time and the light. It's disgusting how pathetic the punishments are now.

Damian I have dealt with countless cases of animal abuse during my years working in animal medicine. You are definitely not the only one who thinks the punishments for animal abuse are a JOKE. Nothing but a slap on the wrist for some of the most heinous acts of cruelty ever seen.

If a person were to do the same things to another human being that I've seen done to animals, they would be sent to prison for years, and in some cases, they'd be sent to prison for life. What makes that kind of sick, demented cruelty to another living being no big deal when it's done to an animal, but punishable by decades in prison if done to a person?

I won't go into detail about what I've seen people do to animals; it would most likely give some people nightmares. It is sick indeed what people are capable of doing to animals.
I am a volunteer and contributor to Logan's Law; a case of animal abuse here in Michigan that has a huge backing by many animal lovers hoping to change the law in our state, and create a registry for animal abusers, similar to the sex offender registry.

I think it honours you that you support the petition. I myself had a dog many years back that was murdered by our own paying guest (not sure how it's called in english). We couldn't prove anything though so nothing happened.
