Why aren't we debating?
Whatââ¬â¢s in the newspaper stamped with ink --
Read whatââ¬â¢s in the newspaper and itââ¬â¢s always something new,
Sitting there, hoping it doesn't happen to you...
Do you really want to know?
Hereââ¬â¢s whatââ¬â¢s to show:
Pictures with teen children in a fight, teeth missing,
Blessings sent for a better day, but thatââ¬â¢s only wishing...
Car full of drunken youths straight from a party,
No seatbelts, vehicle swerves, hits the concrete.
A five year old dies of leukemia,
Never got the birthday he was dreaming of...
A mother crying, son shot on the streets,
Middle school picture posted on the news feeds.
The KKK strikes a black church,
One match, a can of gasoline, burns it to the earth...
Lonely man walks the street, gets mugged,
A girl named Cynthia dies from an overdose of drugs.
A drug bust on the childrenââ¬â¢s playground,
Kids run inside as they search the grounds with bloodhounds...
Things just became shadier.
This is exactly why I donââ¬â¢t read the newspaper...

Do you really want to know?
Hereââ¬â¢s whatââ¬â¢s to show:
On the papers, I hear a womanââ¬â¢s had a long life --
Itââ¬â¢s her birthday, sheââ¬â¢s ninety-five!
But that doesnââ¬â¢t cover the worldââ¬â¢s strife...
A man has just murdered his own wife,
Took her into the kitchen and got her with the knife...
A black man has just robbed a bank and a gas station,
Four cops beat another black man to death in retaliation.
A little girl has just been abducted,
Another terror threat has just been obstructed.
A man is shooting up a school, get the kids and hide,
Kills twenty and shoots himself in an act of suicide.
While another man, car drilled with bullets, is glad to be alive.
Try to stay inside where itââ¬â¢s safer --
At least you got your story on the newspaper...

Sitting there, hoping it doesn't happen to you...
Do you really want to know?
Hereââ¬â¢s whatââ¬â¢s to show:
Paramedics on the crime scene,
Two witnesses continue to scream,
A shootout ends with one man dead, lying in a red stream...
A high-pace chase, the driver, from his car he was sent,
Lying in pain as he tastes the pavement.
A hurricane strikes, accusations flying,
Some didnââ¬â¢t get out in time, a dozen families crying...
And hereââ¬â¢s an article that has much to be said,
I guess chivalry really is dead,
Wicked men robbed a blind woman.
Cowards Iââ¬â¢m assumingââ¬Â¦
Meanwhile, whatââ¬â¢s happening in other countries?
Terror bombings, hijackings, and regions seized,
Another one for the news feedââ¬Â¦
You stand there saying, ââ¬ÅI hope that doesnââ¬â¢t happen to meââ¬Â
As you flip through the obituaries --
So many stories,
So much tragedy,
In that paper you hold in your hands as you take that sip of coffee.
It doesnââ¬â¢t stop at what you see, be assured,
So many other struggles not yet heard.
There is nothing else to do but keep on a smile,
As we undergo societyââ¬â¢s trials.
Just know that the problem is always greater,
Remember that as you read the newspaper.
