Healthy 75-Year-Old Ends Her Life So She Won't Grow Old

Freedom, a equal chance to succeed or fail, a better life,
As long as there's an even playing field for everyone; otherwise, not so much.
And we are not doing it under true capitalism so it’s no surprise.
There's never been "true capitalism" on this earth, not as long as humans have been alive.
Yeah crony capitalism does that.
No, rigging the scales for the rich does that. Try again.
In the beginning the labor movement was fantastic and needed. But like all things when government dips it’s toes into something it became corrupt and useless for the working man.
Its' still needed today so screw all the right-to-work pablum; you didn't get the rights you have by playing paddy-cakes with businesses. You got them because somewhere someone sweated, bled and sometimes died to get those rights.

As long as there's an even playing field for everyone; otherwise, not so much.

In the states their is despite the bitching and whining.

There's never been "true capitalism" on this earth, not as long as humans have been alive.

Up until the mid 1960s after it was the closest we’ve ever seen and created a better world.

No, rigging the scales for the rich does that. Try again.

Government involvement rigs the scales for the rich who play with government for mutual favors.

Its' still needed today so screw all the right-to-work pablum;

Not under the current design it isn’t, does far more damage. They need a reset.

you didn't get the rights you have by playing paddy-cakes with businesses.

You got the rights you have because our founders were the first in history that wanted a very limited federal government.

You got them because somewhere someone sweated, bled and sometimes died to get those rights.

Got them because people could sweat, bleed and possibly die trying without interference from government regulating their hopes and dreams.

Up until the mid 1960s after it was the closest we’ve ever seen and created a better world.
And we're paying the price for it now, thank you very much....

Capital and society.
No, definitely not in the sense that you are implying. Capital and society are often at odds with each other, with the logics of capitalism actively harming and undermining society.
As it should be it makes everyone’s life better.
The predominant focus on increasing productivity over human needs and alternative values inflicts psychological and physical harm on people. It has contributed to the massive increase in mental health challenges that the world is seeing. A lot of unneeded suffering because of it. The suicide of the nurse in this thread is but one of the latest examples.
Not under capitalism but crony capitalism absolutely.
Capitalism has inflicted those harms from the get go. As it can be more profitable in the short term for capitalists to neglect these consequences if it doesn't impact them directly enough.
Not under capitalism, because government doesn’t play favorites on who succeeds and fails it’s completely based on the market. Government plays favorites in today’s crony capitalism and people got a very good taste of it during the pandemic that wasn’t hidden like most of it in today’s world.
The state has been involved with capitalism right from the beginning. Without a state capitalism would not have spread across the world like it did. Although once it established itself as the world system states, and later governments, became subservient to capitalist logics and dictates.
No, it’s been who is the best, determined, clever and willing to work harder than the competition with a dash of luck thrown in.
That has never been the case and under capitalism it is not possible for that to ever be the case.
No it gives the marginalized a far better than life than any other system we have or had. Healthcare that doesn’t have government involvement like Lasik is now affordable because the rich invested in it by having it done which funded the research to make it more affordable which drove competitors to lower prices. When I got it done in 2006 it was $3000 a eye! It’s around $500 dollars now and pretty much gives everyone a opportunity to have it done.

Flat screen tvs used to cost $30,000 dollars! Thanks to capitalism you can get one for a few hundred.

The examples are endless and only capitalism brought us everything we enjoy with comforts that the poorest Americans make countries look like millionaires compared to many 3rd world countries.
Capitalism is what led to the creation of the third world as wealthy states enriched and developed themselves through the exploitation and marginalization of the rest of the world.
Not sure what you are talking about here??
The anxiety that comes from the need for people to always be productive, which renders people who are unable to reach these standards as being without value. She chose to take her own life because she wasn't able to accept going into a state of existence where she wasn't productive by capitalist reasoning.
Yeah, that’s pretty much in every society under any form of government.
Nowhere near the degree that it is under capitalism. Other forms of society had alternative means and ways of valuing life and society. They weren't as exclusively focused on profitability and capital.

No, definitely not in the sense that you are implying. Capital and society are often at odds with each other, with the logics of capitalism actively harming and undermining society.

Under our current crony capitalism, much less yes. When we had more laissez faire capitalism absolutely.

The predominant focus on increasing productivity over human needs and alternative values inflicts psychological and physical harm on people.

As to say socialism and communism actually wiping out half a billion people and counting.

Increasing and capability of producing more is because people are more prosperous than ever before because they have better lives than ever before, so no.

It has contributed to the massive increase in mental health challenges that the world is seeing.

No it hasn’t! That’s society decline because morality and life hold less value.

A lot of unneeded suffering because of it.

Weak leaders, weak people being raised has caused unneeded suffering.

The suicide of the nurse in this thread is but one of the latest examples.

That’s socialism and the lack of society caring for the individual and encouraging this behavior.

Capitalism has inflicted those harms from the get go.

Capitalism has created a means to give people of all status a better life and has succeeded.

As it can be more profitable in the short term for capitalists to neglect these consequences if it doesn't impact them directly enough.

Having a stagnant people with no hopes and dreams to do no better then your neighbor is the consequences.

The state has been involved with capitalism right from the beginning.

If you’re talking about America, thank god! Yes they promoted capitalism but didn’t try to influence capitalism for political gains as it should be.

Without a state capitalism would not have spread across the world like it did.

Without today’s government involvement in controlling capitalism more poor nations would be enjoying the benefits of capitalism.

Although once it established itself as the world system states, and later governments, became subservient to capitalist logics and dictates.

What people want, yes better health care, better housing, something for their children, basically a better life by all measures.

That has never been the case and under capitalism it is not possible for that to ever be the case.

What?

Capitalism is what led to the creation of the third world

No socialism and dictatorships did that.

as wealthy states enriched and developed themselves through the exploitation and marginalization of the rest of the world.

Under dictatorships and socialism not Democratic countries that were not corrupt. Capitalism is only as good as the people in control of those governments.

The anxiety that comes from the need for people to always be productive,

Common human nature, people are healthier physically and mentally when they have a purpose in life as we see now with lost souls with no purpose in life but have mental issues.

which renders people who are unable to reach these standards as being without value.

Under socialism and communism, absolutely.

She chose to take her own life because she wasn't able to accept going into a state of existence where she wasn't productive by capitalist reasoning.

She did it because socialism pushes the agenda you have no value when you get old, capitalism does the opposite.

Nowhere near the degree that it is under capitalism.

Better life, let alone live longer under capitalism.

Other forms of society had alternative means and ways of valuing life and society.

And they sucked the further away they were from democracy and capitalism

They weren't as exclusively focused on profitability and capital.

Right, they didn’t give two shits about the individual

When we had more laissez faire capitalism absolutely.
When've we ever had a completely had "laissez faire capitalism"?
Capitalism has created a means to give people of all status a better life and has succeeded.
If there's an equal playing field; unfortunately, through most of human history that hasn't been the case.
Yes they promoted capitalism but didn’t try to influence capitalism for political gains as it should be.
Politics has always been a part of society.
What people want, yes better health care, better housing, something for their children, basically a better life by all measures.
And people didn't get them because of the benevolence of the rich and/or powerful; they got them because they fought for them at every step of the way.
Capitalism is only as good as the people in control of those governments.
See the second answer above.

When've we ever had a completely had "laissez faire capitalism"?

Read what I wrote again.

If there's an equal playing field; unfortunately, through most of human history that hasn't been the case.

Never will be and never has been and never can be, we’re all very different.

Politics has always been a part of society.

Of course, I’m not saying it hasn’t, I’m saying the more it stays out of a very complicated economy the better we are all for it.

And people didn't get them because of the benevolence of the rich and/or powerful; they got them because they fought for them at every step of the way.

As it should be, we all do better as a society when we strive and struggle for what we want to achieve.

See the second answer above.

Read what I wrote again.
I did; that's why I said the above.
Never will be and never has been and never can be, we’re all very different.
I know the table will never be completely equal, but it doesn't mean we can't work to make it as equal as possible.
I’m saying the more it stays out of a very complicated economy the better we are all for it.
Gotta' have someone making sure no one cheats...
As it should be, we all do better as a society when we strive and struggle for what we want to achieve.
As long as we don't forget the least among us as we do so....

Under our current crony capitalism, much less yes. When we had more laissez faire capitalism absolutely.
It isn't a matter of which variant of capitalism we have in any given instance as the logics of capitalism are themselves corrupting. Attempts to control capitalism will only result in the reverse happening with capitalism controlling those seeking to moderate it. We have seen this time and time again as reform attempts under a capitalist world system are insufficient. The problems with capitalism have been present from its origin. At its core capitalism is an unethical system which is based on exploitation, marginalization. It was often through force and brutality that it was spread around the globe. In most instances this happened through colonialism and imperialism. Which were not done for the goodness and wellbeing of the societies that were being colonized. Vast resources were extracted and stolen to provide for the development and enrichment of the EuroAmerican capitalist states. The state itself has been intrinsically involved in the creation of conditions needed for capitalism to flourish and it continues to serve this role to this day. Although while the state was initially the dominant force at the inception of capitalism, as it very much depended on the state for its commencement, the relationship is now reversed. States are now capitalist in nature and act in compliance with the capitalist world systems. This has taken a toll on people on all levels. The nurse in this thread paid the price for anxieties and stresses produced by capitalism. It was because of capitalist logic that she took her life. The need to be constantly productive and beneficial to the profitability and needs of capital is an intrinsically capitalist value.

Well since it’s the most successful form in history that’s created the greatest success for all people around the world actual capitalism matters very much.

Attempts to control capitalism will only result in the reverse

Attempts to control capitalism makes society worse and people poorer.

happening with capitalism controlling those seeking to moderate it. We have seen this time and time again as reform attempts under a capitalist world system are insufficient.

What we’ve seen is socialism killing millions

The problems with capitalism have been present from its origin.

Crony capitalism is the problem

At its core capitalism is an unethical

It’s the most ethical and fair.

system which is based on exploitation,

It’s based on each individual’s abilities, socialism and capitalism is based on exploitation and fear.

marginalization. It was often through force and brutality that it was spread around the globe.

No corrupt government do that not capitalism.

In most instances this happened through colonialism and imperialism.

In most cases this has happened under almost every form of government throughout history.

Which were not done for the goodness and wellbeing of the societies that were being colonized.

Nope, but not capitalism

Vast resources were extracted and stolen to provide for the development and enrichment of the EuroAmerican capitalist states.

I’m not going to get off on a side argument but that’s not actually completely true and it’s certainly not because of capitalism. Stronger nations under any form of government do and have done this.

The state itself has been intrinsically involved in the creation of conditions needed for capitalism to flourish

Not until 60s no it hasn’t, but it ruined it pretty quickly after that.

and it continues to serve this role to this day.

A corrupt government yes creating crony capitalism, absolutely. But even under this horrible way of economics it’s still vastly better than anything else we have.

Although while the state was initially the dominant force at the inception of capitalism,

No the government mostly stayed out of capitalism and let individuals create. In today’s world government has so many restrictions we would never see a new Disney or Apple created.

as it very much depended on the state for its commencement,

Crony capitalism lives off of corrupt government.

the relationship is now reversed. States are now capitalist in nature and act in compliance with the capitalist world systems.

God I wish the states were actually real capitalists. Texas, Florida and few others are the closest.

This has taken a toll on people on all levels.

Government regulations and in every part of your life has taken the toll on people to prosper.

The nurse in this thread paid the price for anxieties and stresses produced by capitalism.

She paid the price for socialism and believing in its agenda.

It was because of capitalist logic that she took her life.

It’s all socialism and the propaganda you as a individual mean nothing and even less when you are older.

The need to be constantly productive and beneficial to the profitability and needs of capital is an intrinsically capitalist value.

Is healthy and makes people feel like they have a purpose. We have a sick society because people are finding they don’t have a purpose as we go away from capitalism.

I’m not going to get off on a side argument
Fair point, you are correct to call me out on that. It wasn't intentional on my part, but I was doing it.
She paid the price for socialism and believing in its agenda.
The problems with this are that it is drastically at odds with the socialist agenda and secondly we live in a capitalist world. So whatever the socialist agenda is, won't have any direct impact on her life.

Well they have socialist healthcare so very little capitalism in what she believed in healthcare.
It’s why I pay my doctors directly with cash and use a health sharing plan instead of insurance for anything over $500. Don’t have to give doctors any personal information and I don’t let them keep any records of me.

So whatever the socialist agenda is, won't have any direct impact on her life.

Under healthcare it did for her.
