Should we charge students for third level / higher education? Or is it a right which should be provided in the same way as other more basic forms of education?

Thoughts?

I think education should be free... well, the first time you do it. (If you decide to get an extra degree later on you should pay...)

Yes. Everything should be free.... education, housing, fuel, booze, food, shoes, hairpieces, alcohol, furniture, electronics, vacations, strong drink, snacks, tobacco, tools, hooch....

Why should I have to work for a living when people who are perfectly healthy get to lay up and watch TV all day and then bitch about what the government should do for them?

Because children -no matter how annoying- are a nation's future.

If you can get a kid an education, so that they do not have to live of welfare for the rest of their life and might actually contribute to the nation that got them that education, why wouldn't you?

Yes education should be subsidized by the government.

Who the hell are you talking about?

Anyway, do you think that people should have to pay for their high school education? If not, then why are you so opposed to a subsidized higher education?

Where do you draw the line?

Do you subsidize a 2 year degree? An AA or AS? Does it have to be a degree or will a certificate suffice?

4 year? BA, BS, etc. Then they need a dual major, say in Electrical Engineering and Physics. Is that OK?

Maybe we should pay for everybody to get a Master's in something... say Education, Business, Chemistry?

What if they want a PhD, MD, DVM, JD, etc.

However it works in Europe.

I would imagine it would be off a curve, so you would get less and less money for school as you continued with your education.

Well, since a very large number of countries have already experimented with different methods of subsidizing higher education, why not pick the one that in practice has worked the best?

The discussion was about college.

And evidently, our good liberal friend didn't do his research into the various European models, most of which do pass on a greater or lesser amount of the cost of a post secondary education to the student, OR strictly limit who they let into the program.

It is not a universal available option in any case.

Would it be sweet if the people that actually want and go to college can get free education, grants, etc. Oh yeah, people do...

Really? Hey man link me then, you could save me $80,000 on UNDERGRADUATE.

No I didn't do research, I have school and a job and I don't have the time. But what I have heard about education over there is vastly different than what you are trying to tell me.

Thousands of students in Britain were rioting in the streets when the government threatened to raise the cost of uni..

Well no not free, but no where near the ridiculous amounts of money you are expected to pay over here..

Ok then no.

Why would it ever be offered for free (or without requiring at least some kind of contribution from the student, whether monetary, labor etc)? That just doesn't make sense.
