Is a higher education becoming more and more necessary in today's society? Justify your answer.

Yes and no. In some fields it's more important than others, but that's not always the case. Competition is high right now, so having a higher education in your particular field is a tremendous jump start. However, it does differ. You may only have your bachelor's degree, but the person beside you has their master's degree. Who is more qualified? Most would say the person with the master's degree, but there's more factors than just education and test scores. A lot of textbook information won't help you in the real world. That's why I believe businesses should look at various factors, such as experience, because you may have your master's or higher, but if you can't cope with pressure or have no experience, who is really more qualified?

It also depends on the type of work I guess.

I think the statistic is the only 25% of jobs require a bachelors degree of higher.

For a long time American education has been pushing everyone toward that. We also need trade education and other such things because the truth is, the majority of people don't need to go to college.

The economy of my country is becoming more and more knowledge based and if I'm not mistaken, it's like that in most wealthy countries. So yes, in most western societies it's becoming more and more necessary to have a lot of people with higher education, because there's no way we can compete with countries like China and India in any other way.

This, however, doesn't mean everyone needs to have higher education, just more people in general.

Higher Education is a lie.

Yes, you will be rewarded with a paper that says you sat through so many hours of classes and achieved a passing grade in whateveritis however that may be accomplished.

But you may not have learned a damned thing.

If anybody is going to increase their overall intellect, you've got to do it yourself.

In support of this conclusion, I post four relevant quotes from people you should have heard of.

I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.

- Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)

Education is what survives when what has been learned has been forgotten.

- B. F. Skinner (1904 - 1990)

“It is not so very important for a person to learn facts. For that he does not really need a college. He can learn them from books. The value of an education is a liberal arts college is not learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks.”

- Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

“If you want to get laid, go to college. If you want an education, go to the library.”

- Frank Zappa quotes (1940-1993)

From what I've seen going on so far in Ireland, yes. We're in a world wide recession and employers want people who they can depend upon do do their job properly. This has led to people often being overskilled to do certain jobs. Let's say a law firm is hiring barristers: one guy has a bachelor of law, and has qualified at a law school. Another has a bachelor AND a doctorate of law, and has qualified at law school. Both of them are barristers, but the guy with the PhD is the one who gets the job.

Yeah, you need to stock up on qualifications this recession...

Yeah if a job doesnt require a college degree, it requires all sorts of certification and tests...

Like at my work I was told that I cannot drive the forklift anymore until I get certified. I already know how to drive it, why do I need a piece of paper that says I can drive it?

The world is just becoming too bureaucratic.
