Homeschooling is rapidly growing in popularity, with the numbers increasing by at least 7 percent every year. There are currently approximately two million children homeschooled throughout the United States. Homeschooling is a hot topic, with a great deal of pros and cons.

Pros to the Homeschooling Debate

First and foremost, homeschooling offers a great deal of freedom, especially educational freedom. While the basics are certainly covered for all homeschool students, the students have a great deal of freedom over what they specifically learn and when. Students can focus on the subject matter that gets them excited, whether that is history, biology or creative writing. Next, homeschooling offers a great deal of physical freedom. Without the strict schedule of school hours, homework and school trips, families have much more freedom to vacation at odd times, visit museums during the week and other such activities. Additionally, homeschooling offers emotional freedom. Students often experience troubles with bullies, peer pressure, boredom and competition. In a homeschool environment, these factors are eliminated. Students are able to think, dress and act the way that they want, making sure that self-esteem remains intact. Lastly, homeschooling offers religious freedom not found in public schools, which is definitely important to many families.

There are many other pros to homeschooling as well. Members of homeschooling families often form significantly closer family relationships. Homeschooling provides a sense of stability to families during difficult times, whether it is illness, moving, death or a new family member. Homeschooling ensures that kids can get the rest they need. No longer are kids forced to rise before dawn to slave away in early morning classes. Lastly, homeschooling eliminates the need for busywork. Homeschooling is a much more efficient way to teach and learn, and can eliminate the need for homework.

Cons to the Homeschooling Debate

While homeschooling can do a great deal of good, there are also a number of disadvantages. First, there are the time restraints. Whether you work, are a single parent or simply choose a time-intensive schooling method, there is a great deal of factors limiting the time available for homeschooling. Financial restrains are another concern, as a source of income is often lost when the decision is made to homeschool. The closeness of homeschooling may prove too much for some families, as parents often must spend a larger amount of time with their children.

Other disadvantages come from limited social interactions. First, team sports opportunities are limited for most homeschoolers, especially teenagers who want to participate in competitive sports. Homeschoolers may find themselves limited in outside connection. While family interaction is great, kids should interact with others outside of the family in order to live full and well-developed lives. Lastly, homeschooling is considered unusual, so you may experience negative comments and attitudes as a result of homeschooling.

Thoughts?

Most certainly not for me. I think it is unhealthy for the kids to be home all the time, and for the parents to be so involved in their kids lives, and I think that there is a huge element of schooling that is about social interaction.

Home schooling seems to be the only way to go. Not to say there are not great kids in public schools but when you meet a home school kid what a step above in all aspects they are compared to the average public school child.

I run into a lady all the time who runs her own business cleaning vacant homes for the same banks and real estate companies that give me my work. Her home school kid is usually in a corner studying and a joy to actually have conversation with. And when he is done studying he learns the value of work by helping mom get dirty homes ready.

Get your kid out of public schools and it will be the best thing you could ever do for your child. Or find a charter school or private school as a second option. Public school is a breeding ground to create stupid.

you both have good points...

i'm for both, sometimes it's better for the child and/or the parent(s) if their child(ren) gets home schooled...

I'm for it on a case-by-case basis, but homeschooling is not always the better answer. There are several aspects that go into determining whether homeschooling is appropriate for a student or if they would be better off in a public or private school. You can get just as bad an education being homeschooled as you can in a public or private school, and vice versa. Many parents think sending their children off to public schools will ruin them, teach them absolute drivel and not prepare them for the world, but that is often a misconception. I feel that learning needs to happen in ALL environments: in the home, in school, out in the world, etc. A parent should be involved in their child's life to either fill in the blanks with facts and skills to get their child through life, and, if they choose to send them to a public/private school, leave it to the school to teach the rest unless a serious issue arises that harms the student's ability to blossom.

I am a high school drop out and was homeless at 17, so public school did very little for me. Those big awful large corporations all the left hate so much gave me my education in a trade school to work with my hands and to eventually give me a highly successful business I now own.

It is not rare if you are willing to start at the bottom. I started off as a porter picking up trash and cleaning out apartments. It took many years to work my way up. Something to many in this current sad generation are not willing to do.

and i'm telling you it's rare for small business owners and big business to hire uneducated and un skilled people now these days... they all ask for education and experience and if you don't have their requirements then you're out of luck because someone else will have those requirements that they are looking for in a applicant...

And I am telling you are a 100 percent wrong if you are willing to start at the bottom of the bottom and earn your way up. Big companies always need the grunts in any company. After that it is up to you to do the rest.

that it true, back when you were 17/18/19/20/21 years old, back when things were a little different, but now these days, people rather hire a skilled/experience worker instead of a person that knows nothing about said job... people don't want to train people, they don't have time for that... and i see it everyday... and people even require workers to have their own truck and tools too... it's a bit different out there since back when you were a young buck and people actually accepted young and unskilled people and train them...

No, it's true now also with so many big businesses just looking for somebody to simply work hard let alone train if they stick around. Companies are desperate just to have one of these millenials do any hard work.

When I was younger, like in the first grade. I thought it'd be cool to be home schooled and begged my mother to do it. She told me that I wouldn't like it and that I should go to school to be around the other kids; that it was important that I go to public school and that I would learn more, and not just that. She felt it was important that I learn some communication skills. So, the whole home schooling idea got kicked to the curb very fast.
