We have all heard of finger rings, but have you heard of mood rings? Just as the name signifies, these rings help in knowing the mood of the person who is wearing the rings. Let us find out more about these rings...
What are mood rings?
Just as the name signifies, these rings help in knowing the mood of the person wearing the ring. Invented by Joshua Reynolds, mood rings enjoyed popularity in the 1970s and are still around today.
Mood rings have a stone or a band that changes colour in response to the changing temperatures of our bodies. The 'stone' in a mood ring is generally a hollow quartz or glass shell containing thermo chromic liquid crystals.
The bottom layer of the ring should be made with sterling silver but is sometimes plated with silver or gold over brass. A strip of liquid crystals is glued on the ring. A plastic or glass dome or a coating is placed over the liquid crystals. In better quality rings, they are sealed to prevent water or any other liquid from getting into the crystals. Moisture or high humidity will spoil the ring.
How mood rings work?
When our mood changes, our body turns warm or cold. As the ring becomes warmer, more energy is available to the crystals. The molecules absorb the energy produced by our bodies and twist, thus altering the way light passes through them. When our body temperature dips, our body turns cold and as a result the ring also turns cold. The molecules fail to get the energy and as a result they get back to the normal colour.
Mood Ring Colours and Their Meaning

- Violet blue - happy, romantic
