Do you ever give your pets human food? If so, what is the last thing you gave your pet?

I used to give my dog some meat here and there, but that's about it.

Giving your dog human food turns them into a beggar! You'll never be able to eat a meal without putting the dog outside again. :P

,my dogs ate a lot of human food when i was dumpster diving regularly, but they got it in their bowls. dogs are simply not allowed to sit and stare at people eating and are never fed straight from the table.

First off, a dog does not need any type of human food, and there are several things a dog should never eat, as they are toxic to a dog's system.

If your dog begs, it's because you taught the dog that this behavior is acceptable. Plain and simple

cats and dogs have difficulty in coping with human processed foods

and never give chocolate to a dog as they can have fatal reactions

and quite agree about how dogs are trained

all of the major brand kibble is corn based and loaded with unhealthy additives. rice or wheat are much healthier grains for dogs (people too)

How to Interpret the Dog Food Comparison Chart PDF Print E-mail
(Comparison Table PDF)
General - This table helps you compare kibble ingredients. List the first 9 ingredients from the bag you're using or considering. Indicate unhealthy ingredients with red, healthy ingredients with green, and filler ingredients with blue.

Compare - See how your kibble compares. Avoid all kibble containing unhealthy ingredients. You're left with ones containing mostly healthy ingredients and filler ingredients. Now, minimize duplicate filler ingredients-especially wheat, corn, and soy.

Wisdom - Now that you know what to avoid, you can make wise food choices for your dog. You'll soon notice that the kibbles most widely advertised or sold by many veterinarians are not the best choices for your canine companion. Look to the Whole Dog Journal (see references) for their annual kibble rating.

Dog Food Cost
Premium kibble is more expensive than kibble that contains cheap, nutritionally poor quality ingredients (this should not surprise you).

However, a $40 bag of premium kibble will typically be fed at considerably less than $1.00 per day. If that seems excessive, think about how much you spend a day for cable TV ($1.45), designer coffee ($2), etc. Please put the nutritional health of your canine companion in perspective.

Who Makes What?
Many major pet food companies in the United States are subsidiaries of major multinational companies. Typically, brands from the same manufacturer contain the same ingredients merely arranged differently.

Nestlé - Purina products: Alpo, Beneful, Dog Chow, Kibbles and Chunks, HiPro, Mighty Dog, Pro Plan, Puppy Chow, Purina One
Del Monte - Cycle, Gravy Train, Kibbles 'n Bits, Nature's Recipe
Colgate - Hill's products: Science Diet and Prescription Diet
Procter & Gamble - Eukanuba and Iams
Mars - Kal Kan, Mealtime, Pedigree, Nutro

I do, but rarely. Sometimes I will give them turkey and carrots. If they're out of food during the night and I can get them food the next morning but they have to wait, I'll give them a small bit of tuna in water.

Yeah that is so true. I used to give my cats and ktitens some pieces of chicken breasts and they jump into my plate every single time I am eating. They know I am eating when I bring my plate.

I've got two kitties surrounding me, begging for my fish. Beggy beggers!
